Well it was a long time coming but finally got a kill in 2018. I actually borrowed my dads crossbow because I hadn’t shot my halon in a couple weeks and wasn’t real happy with the way I was shooting. I felt I still wanted to use archery tackle to hunt and after taking 20 or so shots at a target with crossbow I felt like that was what I was going to do. Felt confident to 40 yards. Last evening of gun season and I decided to hunt on the ground in an old trailer that was left sit in a fence row at the corner of a field where the deer had been coming out to feed in picked corn. Sure enough it worked out. Saw a handful of deer crossing field early in evening and then right at dark heard a group of deer coming up hill in woods and came into field 25 yards away from the overgrown trailer that I was tucked up in. Shot was good but not perfect. Hit her in shoulder and bolt must have deflected up into her spine. Needless to say no tracking was necessary but it did take another shot to finish get off. I think next year I’m going to work on that trailer and make it better as far as shooting lanes and concealment. Great spot!!strange how shooting this deer feels to have taken a weight off my shoulders. Still have 2 more doe tags and buck tag for late season after Christmas. Who knows maybe we can get antlers next BHOD!!!! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Sorry guys not sure what happened there. My phone throws fits from time to time. Was trying to post pictures. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Congrats on the doe. No doubt that takes a little weight off the shoulders. You did the right thing changing over to the x-bow if you weren't happy with the way you were shooting. I shot one for a couple season before and after my shoulder surgery. I still take it out from time especially in the late season when it gets harder to draw with a heavy coat on. That trailer sounds like the ticket. I'm still working on it. I washed some gear tonight with hopes that I will be able to get out one evening this week. Lots of time left in OH. Good luck to those still trying to fill a tag or two.
Merry Christmas guys. Our Late archery and flintlock seasons starts tomorrow. I have to work tomorrow then I’m off to camp with my son, brother and his daughter and 4 other guys to chase some deer around for 3 days with the old smoke pole. Should be a good time. After I return I’m going to try to fill my last tag at home with my bow. Need to get some more meat. I got an electric smoker from Santa that is screaming to be used for something yummy. Good luck and happy new year. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Hope everyone had a very merry Christmas! I got something that was the icing on the cake yesterday! The antlers from (Captain Kirk) the buck that the neighbors dogs killed! I’m super happy to have them in my possession now! And come to find out I had 2 nice bucks hitting my bait in the middle of the daylight on Christmas Eve, and I’m thinking that one of them is from the buck that I named Captain Kirk! Finally got the crossbow dialed in. Had a defective scope when I bought it. Put a red dot on it and sighted in to 50 yards. Hitting the woods this evening to enjoy the beautiful weekend.
I know it's late and contest is been long over. I just wanted to apologize to the team for cutting out and not keeping up through the contest and season. I hard some rough times, lost my mom and a lot of other issues. I got depressed and was messed up for a good while. I'm sorry for not getting with you all. Hope everyone had a good season and good luck on upcoming season.
