Not sure, I thought behind the shoulder but I rushed the shot because if he moved I was screwed. You're probably right, but if I bump him out of the corn its gonna be into a bayou system that is a mess.

    So to recap today-

This AM started dead, by 9 I was on my feet still hunting/scouting for next year in the fresh snow. Came up on a solo set of very large tracks. Very. Started ghosting them, then I see a deer's butt about 50 yards down into thick stuff on my right side below me. Just walking slow, not alarmed. So I plot an intercept path and get all zeroed in on that, completely miss the herd of 12-15 mixed does and small bucks on my left, blow them out and of course they take the big one with.

My cousin tries a wind bump towards me with no results. Just as that finished up we hear beagles baying, headed in our direction. So we wait hoping for a push, no dice. We run into the guys and they're not even actually hunting, just running their damn dogs on the opening day of second season. Idiots!

So we go back to camp, eat lunch, let the dogs run around for a bit then head back out to an adjacent parcel only to find the Beagle Boys are blowing that all to hell also.

    Plan...F?
I had head to a very deep corner and immediately run into a ton of tracks, mostly heading north (away from the beagles and away from food.) So I set up thinking towards dark they'll filter thru back north towards the fields. Also, there's a favorable N/NW wind for this set up.

So about 4:30, guess what happens? Big group of deer come in from the SE (completely opposite of what should have happened) I see really tall tines on one, at least an 8, get the scope lined up on him waiting for him to clear a couple trees, them I literally felt the wind on the back of my neck shifting more westerly and thought, "good thing he's still far enough south" immediately through the scope behind him I see all the does that were ahead of him further north (now straight down wind) about-facing and bounding/snorting away, taking him with.

Needless to say, I'm back at the camper drinking whiskey. Wondering a) do I really smell that bad and b) how I could love to do something that so routinely nut punches me.

Swee nothing but turkeys and hunters, think the pressure is pushing these deer. If we get this snow i may try to find a new area on monday.

LFTGB (sounds like a new gay rights movement)

Dead calm, supposed to be minimal S/SW winds today. Set up on a big run I the snow with a ridge behind me that I know they run in the AMs.

This is my last gun hunt of the year, if I don't tag one today I can still bow hunt for a few more weeks altho the next 2 weekends are booked with family stuff.

Was hinking about complaining about how I haven't seen any secondary rut action and I haven't seen a big bucks in 2.5 weeks...

While thinking, 5 does with a spike and small 8 show up..

DANG...I can only imagine what would have came through if I had actually posted a complaint.

    Headed to church.

    Good luck tracking the 8.

I just had two different groups of does come in from two different sides as I was scoping the one group the other one saw me move and busted blowing them all out. 8+ total deer, no horns. One of them might have killed herself she ran smack into the end of a fallen tree, it snapped in half and she dropped like a rock. Never saw her get back up. Give out another hour then go check out where she bit it before I head out.

Well the boss decided he wanted to be an ass today and kept us all an hour over. Still went and ended up still hunting all the way to the stand. Got up and set up at 9 and by 915 had five doe come directly downwind at 40 yards. I have no idea how they never winded me. Straight from work...anyway they never offered a shot and I never seen anything else. Phone died from the cold as soon as I took it out of my pocket. Next sit is tomorrow evening.
