I’ve watched a lot also. I have to keep reminding myself that they only hunt a spot 3-4 times and move to a new piece knowing they’re going to burn it up. It wouldn’t work well on the 12 acre piece I hunt. Plus the public grounds on the wI/IL state line were I am is extremely hunted hard.

Pretty sure I have seen the older guy (not Ted Miller, referring to the guy who's like 35 and drives the Ford Ranger) spray down. It actually jumped out at me b/c the crew as a whole never does. Or at least they don't shot it.

But you guys are right- they are pretty bare bones when it comes to that. They play the wind religiously. But when your entire approach is dedicated to run and gun; you can do that.

Even the 40 acre private parcel I hunt in WI is too small to do that. With 2 hunters and about a 3 acre corner reserved for the camper and a big food plot, you can only have so many stands that are not on top of each other and not have a bad or at least marginal wind. You gotta practice as much scent control as possible in those scenarios.

That being said, I feel that if they paid more attention to scent control they wouldn't get "ground scent busted" as much as they do. Happens to them more than they actually get winded.

I will admit I'm guilty. I don't practice any serious scent control. I just play the wind. the best part is I've saved thousands of dollars. I do laugh when I see all of the women on shows plastered with make up like the deer can't smell that? then they show a scent control advertisement. people will fall for anything. i'll be out around 2:oo today so i'll check back in when I get on stand.

To further my insanity, I just cancelled my only appointment today. I am not going to miss the midday hunt. Should be out and on stand by 11am. I think this buck must be some kinda of millennial with the way he has displayed his selfish behavior. All I want to do is slip an arrow through him but nooo, he just thinks about himself.

My guess is THP doesn't do much scent control because as much as they hike they get sweaty and are going to stink no matter what. It's like hunting in the mountains, you have to play the wind and thermals. You simply cannot hike that much an expect to be scent free-ish.

I have not been hard core busted by a single deer this year because of scent...in well over 100 hours on stand. I'm not foolish enough to say no deer has ever smelled me nor do I think I never leave traces of scent around. I've talked to a few of my hunting friends about this. Normally it happens a few times a year. I've seen more deer this year than ever also. I stick to a rigorous scent routine. My laundry room goes scent free after Labor Day. ALL my clothes is washed scent free - Tide Free or a hunting detergent. I only use scent-free deodorant and don't use cologne. I put on scent free clothes and drive to my locations, remove the outer layer, get clothes out of tub, outer most layer is Scent-Lok. I've done this for years. Three things different this year compared to prior years; 1 - I have not used any scent killing spray, 2 - I used 18 inch Apha Burly and tighten around calves instead of tying black military boots, 3 - it's been a cold season, I only wore my warm weather scent-lok once or twice = more layers and less sweat.

I still try to hunt the wind from my tree stands and don't over hunt a single stand. The buck I shot came from upwind...never would have smelled me even if I smelled like bounce & calvin kline....go figure!

I believe they use scent free laundry detergent, not a hunting brand, just whatever is cheap from the grocery store. Other then that, just playing the wind. I think they mentioned this in one of the youtube live Q and A videos.

    Update:
The long haired kid with no mustache has killed more (and bigger) bucks on public land in the last 3 years than I have in a lifetime of hunting. So who am I to even be a tiny bit critical? Their run and gun style just works.
