Oh yea, forgot you didn't get a gun tag. Never mind. If I do go, it'll be with the bow.
You just didn't apply for one this year?

No, that will change come March/April though.

The past several years I have waited for them to go on sale over the counter. Some years I was even able to get one second season. Past 2 years they have cut tag numbers bigly, last year I waited until a few days before 1st season and they were sold out, this year they were sold out by 11am the day they went on sale. Should have known when they closed the county to late antlerless the past several years permit numbers were being cut.

I'll get at minimum an either sex next season. May pick up a muzzle loader(gun and tag) as well just for chits and giggles.

If so I have a neat little spot in some crap apple trees. I just have to watch all the branches, .a few years back these branches cost me a nice fat doe.

What is often referred to as a secondary rut is when the doe fawns cycle for the first time as they reach heavy enough body weight to be sexually mature. Also, any does that did not get bred during the primary rut time will cycle again 28 days later. Secondary rut can be a great to hunt if you know the timing of it. The big boys will be out looking for the virgins.

I understand what it is, and it's a 25-30 day cycling period that can go into a 3rd cycle etc. until bred.

I was more curious as to how people strategize for it, if they even do.

It's not as clear cut as the November primary rut where you want to be on stand every chance possible the first 3 weeks of Nov.

Do more does go unbred during the peak rut when so many are in estrous at the same time?

Just one of those things where timing the second rut is nearly impossible it seems.

Say Nov. 10th was peak rut and majority of does cycled at same time, that would put it near December 7-9th weekend for a majority of unbred does to cycle again. It's never as active as the primary rut, but activity picks up just the same. Going by this thread this year, I'd bet everyone has a different date they would deem peak rut.

I'll be out that weekend regardless, see what it brings.

I watched a mature buck chase a small doe across a bean field yesterday.

Sounds like a good time to be hunting the secondary rut. I think it will also be around those dates here as well.

Speaking of the rut, when do you guys typically stop calling to deer you see? December?

I never do if they are not coming my way. Won't be agressive but light/contact grunting never hurts any time of the season. Sometimes all you need to do is grab their attention and make them look.

I don't think I have ever spooked a deer with either the can or grunt. Deer are vocal all times of the year. You'd think doe bleats would still be effective post rut as they start to herd back up.

I'll be at it until January 6th. Unfortunately so much stuff going on right now.... company Christmas trip to Boston this weekend, and the following weekend I'll be working in Oklahoma. I won't be back in the stand until at least the 15th :bigcry:

I'm hoping I can slip into that island I found on Friday. Get in nice and early and work the wind, scanning for bedded deer.
