Slow morning over all. I was able to scrape out a couple ducks. Lost a 3rd in the tall grass. Saw a group of swans cupped up drop into the river , which was pretty sweet. These no wind days aren’t helping out getting birds to work though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just got to JPT house. First hunt tomorrow morning. It’s going to be a fun weekend! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We went to the public land spot today on harsens island. It’s a lottery draw. And we got 22nd out of 31. So the zone we picked to hunt wasn’t great. Just shot the one drake woodie. Not a ton of birds flying. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Holy smokes was this weekend tough... no matter what weekend he comes up Oly always seems to miss the birds here lol. Since the week after the opener theyve been really stale and we havent seen many new ones. In 4 days of hunting we managed to scrape up 10 ducks- 6 of which being this morning when we were finally able to get some to work.
Man the struggle was real. Glad we got birds to work today. One of these times we will hit the birds right. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’ve shot into some pinnies the past few years but never anything even near plumed out, finally broke the ice with a young one today but still white!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My first outing tomorrow. Getting hyped looking at all the duck pics! What kind of shot/ chokes do people use? I went all last season with a modified choke and #2 shot.... then after season I went to shoot clay pigeons with the modified choke in and couldnt hit a damn thing! I'm about to try using an improved cylinder choke with #2 shot.
I went out this afternoon, I shot at a lot, I knocked one down but my dog wouldn't retrieve it from the swamp, she is not trained either I was hoping her instintics would take over. So does it count New to this game
I swap between a lot of different combos depending on my set up and what/where I am hunting. I own Patternmaster chokes Mid, Long and Extended Range, Carlson Cremators in Close, Mid, and Long Range, Comp-N-Chokes in Lite Modified and Modified, Kicks and Jebs in Improved Cylinder. My all around shot size is #2's in both 3" and 3 1/2" and BB's in 3" and 3 1/2", but depending on my hunting situation and if I'm strictly goose hunting or not or field hunting or on big water or small water. At the end of the day it is trial an error really, shooting as many different combos to see what choke and shell your gun likes best and throws the best patterns with. I would recommend for you to try to shoot as much as you can and see what works best. Good luck!
Good day out in Missouri. Mallards, Gadwall, GWT and a couple shovelers for a kicker. Heading back to Md now. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Pattern your shotgun on paper. It takes a minute and will save you time, money and missed game. For waterfowl hunting you may want to pattern at 20 and 40 yards to give you an idea what your pattern looks like with feet down over the decoys vs pass shooting. Steel and lead will pattern differently and have different lengths of shot strings which may be a factor when shooting at flying ducks vs stationary targets like turkeys.
I think this is overlooked part of waterfowl hunting. I shot over a half dozen different shells through my benelli super nova with a modified Carlson choke. It’s confidence booster when you know you have a bunch of pellets in a tight group. I moved to the full choke this year and I checked the pattern again. With the super nova shooting hevi shot hevi metal 3” 2s I had 147 pellets in a 30inch circle at 30 yards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Went out yesterday- it was a really really slow day. Missed on my one and only opportunity. Simply not many ducks out and the ones that were were flying high and would not commit to decoys. Still a fun outing though Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
