I hunt areas like Joe has posted, large timbered tracks of unbroken forests. In this map the terrain itself creates the edges, corridors and natural bottlenecks.

Thinking a little outside the box...edges and funnels are created by three things. "Cover" which promotes/encourages movement..."Structure" which forces/altars movement...and "Terrain" which subconsciously defines movement.

Good luck man. I hunted NW public land one season and had some decent luck. If you were close to that I'd have sent you everything I got down to GPS coordinates.

So Ill be hunting monday on public, problem is I suck at waking up early, especially with an hr drive plus time to walk in. Im trying to weigh the pros and cons of going in Sun night and camping. It is allowed, but Im worried about my scent reeking, plus not being able to use my phone gps, making sure I bring enough food, gear ect. As I type it out ill probably just try to force myself to get on the SwampStalker Wake up service list...

Set the alarm on your phone and put in on the other side of the room so you have to physically get up and shut it off!

60% of the time it works every time

Why not hunt private that is close to home Monday morning then hit the public in afternoon?

So that is an option. But the main trail that the deer use to get into bedding is right next to factory and the guys start working before sunrise. I think most mornings when the guys start working the deer hurry back to their beds before light.

First public land scout. Found these in a swampy creek bottom. Any tips how to set up to hunt this? Full of deer tracks and scrapes everywhere. Not too many rubs though. But this monster was one of them. Fresh too. Had dug in tracks all the way around and fresh shavings on the ground. This is insane to me never seen anything like it. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

They love bedding in that kind of terrain. Try to find out where they are bedding and eating, you said there was a creek right? I would personally walk the creek and try to find one of the more obvious spots that they cross. If they are bedding on one side and feeding on the other you might be able to find some really good pinch points.

If this is a scrape, and you have the right wind that you can get in, hang a stand in one of the trees in the background of this pic...

If they have a big enough trunk and you have a hang on...[IMG]

Find where that area backs into the woods. Creep along until you find a spot where you can ambush them during daylight.

Ground......natural blind. use some of the dead grass to cover yourself with. when the buck passes you and is quartering away, Draw and KILL!! I'd set up 20 yards off of the run to be safe.
