Had a close encounter with a shooter tonight. Came to 20 yards but moved quick and offered no shot. [IMG]

Team- Worked from the house this fine fall Friday. Got out the last 2 hours of light. Perfect situation. Local state park, looking for a mature doe. Walked in and was eyeing a few trees to climb. Saw some movement behind me and a nice doe came broadside at about 10 - 12 yards. Let a nice calm shot go. Forgot to hold a bit lower with the close yardage but, heard what sounded like a chest cavity hit on a slightly high shot (pass through, arrow completely covered in blood). Doe never reacted to the shot. Just started walking away. 20 minutes later, I see it about 80 - 100 yards from me standing around. I was shaking my head. Figured it was going to drop in front of me. Never did.

I backed out. Waited another hour and 10 minutes (1.5 hours after the shot). Thinking I would find her dead in the dark. Spent 2.5 hours tracking about 125 yards or less through tall grass and brush. Never stopped bleeding (bright red). Not pouring out but, plenty of blood IMO. Had to pack it in when we lost the trail. Just could not find it in the tall brush at that point. I have no doubt that it did not stop bleeding.

My fingers are crossed that it's within 100 yards of where we dropped the trail. Will be out around 8 am tomorrow looking again. Will not take my bow. Should be a recovery mission as long as the trail does not go dry.

Judging from my shot and the blood. I'm guessing I clipped a lung and possibly hit the liver.

    Here was the arrow. IMG_9725.JPG

OK. Well. Was not looking great when I woke up to rain and knew the blood trail would have been washed away. Happy ending after all. Doe found 30 yards from where we stopped last night. Temp should have been cold enough to not spoil the meat. It's dropped off at the butcher now. Here are some pics from the tracking efforts. You can see why we struggled at night in this brushy stuff.

Shot was higher and farther back than I believed it was. Looked like liver and no lung at all. Lungs were perfect. IMG_9725.JPG IMG_9728.JPG IMG_9731.JPG IMG_9732.JPG IMG_9741.JPG IMG_9745.JPG

    Congrats.

Was covered up in does tonight, had few hanging by my stand for a while. Resisted shooting one being Sunday evening and the long drive home I have with work in the morning. Had some good bucks in the area, but none showed up.

This guy showed up in my backyard. Hard photo to see as it is from my security camera. He is a brute with a wide rack. Would post vide but, it's tough to see him well.

Wanted to check the cam from the spot I hunted on Saturday night but...forgot the keys to the lock :)

I walked what would have been my new #1 last night. He is a giant 8pt but had a broke brow. The other brow was 9". I am guessing him to be in the 138 range without the brow. His g2s were over 12". I drew on him at 30 quartered too me and I noticed his brow was broke. He was broadside for a second at 20 yards. I watched him feed for a while at 50 yards. I am going to kill a big deer this year or not kill anything else.

if the rain will slow up some I am headed out this afternoon. Temps here in Arkansas are falling all day and the low is going to get down to the low 40's. Deer ought to be moving

130's is big where I come from, however, can't shoot at something that does not make you happy! I'm looking for a big one as well. Will see what happens when I start seeing bucks though. If the heart races...shots are flying!

I don't have as big of bucks this year on my lease. Some mature bucks but nothing like usual. I haven't hunted it yet this year and I might just sit it with my son this year. Here are a couple of pics from the last pull.

Here is one of the bucks I was hunting in Buffalo County. I am going back October 30-31 hoping to see him or one of the other big bucks.

10/16 @ 6:45pm: I missed my new #1. He was coming down the ridge, like I needed, but saw the doe group under my tree. He walked directly to me and I had to wait until the moment of truth to draw. When I drew, a doe blew. He bounded off to around 45. I thought he was around 40 and I held low as I always do when the deer are alert. Clean miss under his heart. He stood at 80 yards for about 2 min watching his back trail. I will be back tomorrow night.

    10/17 @ 5:45pm: New #1 crashed in the holler.[IMG][IMG][IMG]
