So with the live from the stand thread and deer contest, I've noticed that several guys on here have been lucky to tag a buck and doe really early on with a probability of tagging out for the season already done or close too it. What are you opinions on tagging out at the beginning of the season or holding out until the end? I think it's great honestly to get it done early, but kinda saddens me for the fact that I would not be able to kill anything the rest of the year. For you guys that tag out early, do you still go sit in the woods and scout still or just hang it up for the year? I feel like we, as hunters spend so much time all year preparing for deer season and for it to be over in the first month kinda stinks! Jealous nonetheless of all you guys that have been able to do that! What's your take on it?
If I tag out early I always imagined I would film for some buddies or take up waterfowl or something like that. But I haven't filled a buck tag in 3 seasons so
We are only allowed one buck here in KY and I already got mine a week ago. For the rest of the season I will be taking my time and hunting occasionally hoping to get a few doe to fill the freezer and hopefully my first archery turkey. I will also be focusing on getting my 8 year old son his first deer. Once all that is accomplished, I will use the time to scout, plan, and prep for next year. The biggest pro of getting it done early is it takes the pressure off the rest of the season and allows you to focus more on family time too. As hunters we sometime have to balance time in the woods and time with the family. This makes it so much easier.
Hunt bordering states. I'm lucky that between VA and NC we get 6 buck tags and unlimited doe tags. Even if that weren't the case MD and KY are close enough to hunt as well. Lots of oppurtunities out there if you have some time and a little spending money (licenses, gas, etc.).
This is pretty cool. My hunting partner is in the process of buying a camera before our opener this weekend. We have talked about eventually doing that for each other.
Tagging out early, must be a nice problem to have. Honestly if that were an issue, it would free up more time to go squirrel hunting or something with some of my younger cousins. They are chomping at the bit to go right now.
Well, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Only one year did I finish my season with an early buck, and to be honest, I was actually a little bummed knowing that I wouldn't be in the woods during the rut. It's just an exciting time to be in the woods. I take it however it comes though.
My goal is to fill my one or two tags not spend days sitting in a tree. I have tagged out on my first sit before and I enjoyed that as much as any other season.
In MD, I can hunt doe until the season ends and have up to 4 bucks so I’ve never tagged out. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
If I tagged out early, I'd hunt a nearby state. Once the first rut is over, I honestly have no desire to continue hunting for that season. something about the build-up of the early fall to late fall and pre-rut and rut activity is what excites me the most. I'm usually burnt out by then too!
I'm lucky enough to have a second buck tag here in Missouri, but cant fill it till gun kicks off 10 November. I love the pre rut and will miss the action of it this year, but I hunted last year till the bitter end and ate tag soup. I can tell you I feel relieved to have gotten one early. I'll get to spend more time with family and be more selective of when I go to the stand. I'll get to chase fall turkeys and may thin out some coyotes even. I just love getting out with my bow. We are only allowed one buck in Indiana. So if I were fortunate enough to tag out here I also hunt Ohio, so I would spend my time there. But I would not pass anything that I really wanted to kill just because i was afraid it would end the season. Blessings........... Pastorjim Sent from my RCT6703W13 using Tapatalk
Learned my lesson just last season about tagging out early. Shot a 125 inch buck around Halloween. I went out for the rut just to be in the woods and try and shoot a doe, saw 10 different bucks in two days and had 2 over 140 at 20yds. Never picked up my bow.
