I’d be happier than a gopher in soft dirt. Congrats enjoy the natural high it’s always a great feeling.
Yes it is. My top 2 bucks, both of which had went nocturnal, are on 2 different farms. After hunting my “buck stand” on my farm I didn’t like the placement of it. I felt like I was too out in the open so Saturday I went and got some of the 3D camo material and wrapped my stand to help hide some movement and break up my silhouette. I still hadn’t had any pictures of my top 2 in the day time but the next morning I decided to hunt the stand I just wrapped. I couldn’t believe it, at 635am my top buck at my farm stepped out at 25 yards, immediately looked right at my stand and saw the change. I don’t believe he saw me because he didn’t take off, he just walked back out of the open and left. So I figured it would be better to leave that stand for a few days to let them get used to the change. Later that afternoon I went to the stand I have at the other farm. This stand is literally almost in a friend’s back yard. Just 10 yard into a thin strip of woods between his house and a bottleneck of 2 bean fields. I hunted all afternoon without seeing anything until right around 7pm last light when an 8 point came out of the bean field and started moving toward my stand. Just a few seconds later this 9 point, which was my other top buck, followed him. The 2 of them came in to 20 yards and this 9 point turned broadside and gave me the perfect shot. I heard him crash but waited a few minutes and then backed out and called my brother in-law to come help me track and bring some extra lights. I was shaking like crazy. The adrenaline running thru me was unbelievable. We gave it about an hour and when we went back we followed a perfect blood trail about 60 yards and found this beast piled up in a ditch from a heart shot. Super blessed and thankful to be able to harvest this guy. I got it done early and now its time to start focusing on getting my 8 year old son his first deer. Crossbow season comes in next month here in ky, and I hope he will have the same success that I did.
Nice buck! Couldn't ask for anything more. First buck ever let alone an archery kill. Make room on the wall!!!
Man that’s awesome! He’s a cool buck! Great story too! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Thanks everybody. It is definitely going to be memorable. I am doing a European mount myself. I decided to go with burying the skull so now I just have to wait (which is easier said than done ha-ha.)
Just wanted to put it out there. My friend tried doing that several years ago on his rifled killed buck. Dug a hole in the ground place the skull in it up to its antlers and covered it with a trash can with a cinder block on top. Maybe be he left it go too long not sure but some critter chewed up his antlers pretty bad. Never done it myself just heard about it. How do you protect them?
I buried the skull to the hilt of the antlers, wrapped the antlers with aluminum foil, then plastic wrap, then tape for good measure. Placed rat dope all around it then covered it with a colored plastic tote with blocks on top. Its right beside my building so I also check on it almost daily, I was worried about that as well but a buddy has done several this way and my brother inlaw just finished doing his this way and they have had no problems.
