GPS Solutions

Hello all!

I recently moved to CO and im looking at a GPS solution to help me not die of exposure in the mountains. Is there anyone that has any advice?

Do people use GPS watches, their phones, good ole maps and a compass, handheld gps, etc?

Ive seen so many mixed reviews on handheld GPS that im beginning to wonder if anyone even uses them or if there is a more up to date solution?

I just dont want to get lost. Thanks for all the help!

 

Use your phone. Onx, Gaia and earthmate are all serviceable.

 

I was planning on using onX. Does it still function in offline mode?

Yes it will. You can download the maps you want to use with the layers you want and use them off line. Apps like Gaia have even more functionality

 

Would you recommend gaia over onX? Do they both have the land jurisdictions on them? Also: will they show my location on the maps?

The premium membership of gaia gives you landowbership info yes. Yes it shows your location even being offline.

 

Oh awesome! Well those sound like great solutions. I think you just saved me from investing in a GPS that i wouldnt even need so thank you!

I haven’t carried a dedicated gps in like 5 years.
I use a Garmin in reach for communication and emergencys, it also acts a back up GPS paired with Earthmate and on its own.
On my phone Gaia gets the nod with Onx....my truck has an iPad with onx and all my maps down loaded.

I even used my phone on hunts in NF, norther Quebec and Manitoba and had no issue hundreds of miles from any type of service.

 

I don't have experience with anything other than Onx with the phone. It's good but doesn't do several of the things I did with my Garmin Rino.

I do have a ton of experience hunting with groups in big woods while using a GPS though. The one thing I loved about my Garmin Rino was the ability to see the rest of the crew on my GPS at any given time. Plus the ability to communicate with them in areas with no cell reception was worth it's weight in gold. My Rino is an older model (535hcx) but if I was ever going on a hunt with others in areas with no reception I'd probably stick with it vs. a phone for these reasons.
