So I finally got a camera for self filming. It's not a fancy one with all the whistles but it will work. This is what I went with. At first I'm not going to use an external mic or a fluid head. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the hunting beast camera arm.
Thanks guys! I pretty excited. I'm curious how things will change now with filming. Should be a fun element to explore!
I know it has changed a lot of things for me. Most of them for the better once you get over the extra time and effort it takes to get setup in the stand. Get yourself a good system for setting up and practice it during the off season so that you don't get frustrated out of the blocks. I have become a better hunter since I started filming. I don't feel like I have to kill something to have a successful hunt or season as long as I have gotten some good footage. You'll either love it or hate it!
Thanks for the tips! A lot will change for me in the offseason. I'm going fully to a run and gun, stand and sticks setup. So practicing is a must! I think the trickiest and most time consuming will be the editing and stitching the videos together.
Awesome.....I'm interested to hear your thoughts after you've gotten started. My daughter will likely begin bowhunting this year, and suddenly, I'm interested in filming as well.
Honestly, I think self filming is long overdue for me. I've been talking about it for about 4 or 5 years. I'm really looking forward to it as I've always wanted to share my adventures with people. A lot of times I've thought, man I wish I had a camera with me. I'm hoping I can be successful at it and deliver some unique content. Everybody and their brother is running a YouTube channel these days and it's hard to stand out. But really I think it's a cool way to save your adventures and share them with people whenever you want to go back to them.
Agreed.....I hunt public land in MO, so the volume of critters is sometimes low, however, there's always something cool to film and being able to hang onto those memories is very intriguing. Sent from my XT1080 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
I had said for 50 yrs. "if I only had a camera with me, nobody would believe what I'm seein". So 4 or 5 yrs. ago. I bought my package from Campbell cameras. Three cameras and four camera arms and two computers and hundreds of hrs filming, and thousands of dollars later I'm not sorry one bit. Iv'e posted some of my adventures here. I'm not very good at it but its just for me and my family and friends. I, probably like most others have 50 times the footage that never got made into a video project. Just the other day I was watching edited footage in my separate hard drive that was never used in one of my videos. It was of my girlfriend in Brevard zoo in FL. We went into the tropical bird cage with nectar that you can buy and she was swarmed with about 20 macaws. They were crawling all over her trying to get the nectar. I was laughing my ass off watching it. It was in this old mans memory bank but to see it live in HD all over again was priceless. My only drawback was that I waited so long to acquire my filming equipment. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to carry it afield.
Marauder and Joe. A huge help are youtube videos on editing. I'm running 2 apple computers. One desktop for the actual production and one laptop watching youtube to learn how to do what I'm trying to do with the video I'm making. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks but he trys like hell. Yes editing is the most frustrating part of the game for me. One video I made was a 2 camera shoot. My friend was filming with a dslr and I was filming with a cannon HFG20. We were 50 yds. apart. I took the footage from his camera and mine and was somehow able to stitch together a cohesive video. Its kind of blurry and not so great by some of the other guys video's here but I worked on it for hrs. and was proud of it. Her's a link And a Great thanks to Windwalker who turned on a BRILLIANT lightbulb for me from this site in video editing.
Got the camera arm finally. Working on wrapping it in stealth strips. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Nice! Like others have said, you will either love it or hate it. My first season was a little frustrating until I figured out a system for me. Its actually pretty easy now. Good luck and have fun with it!
Nice! I’ve been kicking it around myself. Look forward to seeing some of your footage, especially up there where you hunt. Hope that little puppy can withstand those temps! You might have to buy your rig some Sitka gear
