I find myself wondering why this article would be published on a site that has Bowhunting in it's name. The 5 types listed in this article are not bowhunters.

They aren't? I know plenty of bowhunters who fit into each one of those categories. Guys who never shoot their bow, guys who can't hit the broadside of a barn, etc. Did you actually read the article before you posted?

I'm #3 on the list of 5. I'm a disabled combat Vet who has a service related permanent shoulder injury. I've been bowhunting for almost 30 years. Just this past year I switched to a crossbow to save my shoulder from the constant pain of being a "true" bowhunter.

I find it sad that I have to explain myself to people why I use a crossbow. I would say I'm also #4, but honestly I do not like being stereotyped by my peers as not being a "true" hunter.

The way the crossbows are marketed and advertised now does not help acceptance within the bow hunting community.

Not my intention to upset or insult anyone. My original and only point is that crossbows are not and never will be bow hunting. I have no issue with people hunting with whatever weapon they choose. I believe they are true hunters with every right to hunt that anyone else has. Swamp Stalker , I appreciate your military service. I believe you should be able to use whatever weapon you choose during that weapon's season. As to allowing people who won't practice or can't shoot accurately to use crossbows will not solve anything. They will practice less and shoot farther.

I'm not opposed to the use of crossbows. I think they can be invaluable in situations like we have here in the Northeast: small parcels (sub 10-acres) that abut neighborhoods. However, I don't agree that with crossbows being categorized as archery. I think they should be allowed in firearms and muzzleloader season and for landowner use anytime, but it isn't quite as comparable to a vertical bow. You can't get busted on the draw, you don't have to hold at draw for 2+ minutes while the deer moves in and out of shooting lanes, etc. Fundamentally, the mechanics of shooting a crossbow are more closely related to shooting a firearm than a vertical bow.

Way too close now for crossbow. Shot should have been taken as soon as you could see the rack.

Add in a rage broadhead and you can shoot in anticipation.

Exactly! They are showing how a CB will hang with a rifle, accuracy wise, at 100yrds. What kind of penetration could you expect at that range? It gives folks a false sense of it's killing ability at long ranges. I shoot a CB as well as my compound, but as far as I'm concerned it's still a 20yrd game either way.

My crossbow is a recurve that shoots 245 FPS. I would not think about a shot over 20 yards, just like my old school Bear "Black Bear" compound from the 80's. Those were the days!

I think there should be a poundage limit or FPS limit on crossbows. (maybe for Compounds as well? it's only a matter of time until we see the first compound shooting over 400 fps)

I agree with Sota, and Early-in. The marketing is not doing "legit" crossbow hunters any favors.

I have no issue with the article or what anyone shoots or how they hunt or what season they are hunting in. So it’s all a matter of schematics. The article, IMO, is subliminally, trying to convey a political message by overuse of the word “bowhunter” just to flame the fire in the debate....

It would have been a more neutral and less combative article had it said something along the lines with “hunters” that would be more comfortable with a crossbow as opposed to a compound rather than using the word “bowhunter” in every paragraph. But again, in my opinion as a reader, it was the intent to have the reader wrestle with labels and images.

But overall, a good and well written article with valid points.
