My son and I have talked about it for a few years and finally did it. Took a lot longer than we thought and was way over budget but hopefully we'll be able to enjoy it for many years. Here are a few pics of the build. Didn't get as many pictures as I'd hope but hopefully it will show it well enough. I got out and hunted in it last weekend and had a little 6 point in the middle of the plot at 20 yds. He had no clue I was there so it must work!! Here is the finished product. Build pics below. Building the frame. Since we are bow hunters we decided on an octagon. Getting windows and paint. Took a large trailer to haul all of the pieces to the property and then multiple truck loads to haul to site. (That's my oldest in 2nd pic) Added legs to the platform on-site. We used the Elevator brackets from Academy. They are very solid. (My dad joined the fun) Then it was just a matter of putting it up piece by piece. Then the roof went on. Thank goodness for my son. I'm a bit to big to be climbing around up there putting shingles on. Below is a pic from the inside with carpet installed and a couple of the windows open. We've since added curtains (I know, sounds odd but it helps with concealing us from the deer). The windows have latches on one side and we replaced the pin in the hinges with nails so we can easily pull them and remove the whole window.
It was right around 1k for everything. Definitely higher than what we figured but I think it will be worth it for many seasons to come.
Looks great! Was thinking about building one like that this winter/spring. Might have some questions for you down the road.
That is an elaborate blind. Do you have to remove a window to shoot? With those large windows, lot of chance for deer to see movement with window behind you, even with a curtain. What is that 20 yd deer going to do while you remove a window and get ready to shoot? Will be gone in a heart beat. My guess is you will be remodeling it for next season. Good luck.
Windows are hinged so they don't have to be removed to shoot, just opened. We made them removable by replacing hing pin with a nail that was just smaller. I've only got to hunt in it once so far. Had a 6 point come into the plot at 20 yds and spend about 15 minutes. Never got spooked. I know a 6 point isn't as smart as a big buck but if he is going to spot me inside this blind then he is totally going to spot my movement in a tree stand. I removed the two windows that point into the plot as soon as I got to the stand to eliminate extra movement.
Very impressive. What are the dimensions of the base platform? I’ve been thinking about building something similar myself.
But where are the electrical outlets and heated flooring? (not to mention the bathroom...) JK, well done and I hope your family gets to enjoy some comfortable fall hunts...
