Another question, the clamp variety of magic arm, would it be able to clamp onto the fluid head handle? Does it go that small?

Also, is there a particular brand of magic arms that are better than another?

I'm just not 100% sure that mounting to the shoe is the route I want to go. I have to get something ordered asap because season opens next weekend

The clamp on the end is referred to as a Super Clamp. They generally go from about 1 cm to 5 cm diameter that they can clamp to. But they probably come in a variety of sizes. They are pretty awesome clamps. Run a search on Amazon for "Magic Arm" and you will find a bunch of them with all kinds of different end configuration options.

The Super Clamp just threads onto the end of a Magic Arm. It is a 1/4-20 thread so if you don't want to use the clamp, the threaded stud will adapt to a lot of different things.

As to brands, who knows if it really matters much. I know that I do like this MDW brand one that I just bought in 7". It has a knurled face at the center knuckle that really locks the two halves down. My 11" one (not sure the brand) doesn't have this. The beauty of Amazon is that if you don't like it, just send it back.

I am sure that the Manfrotto brand one is killer as well but it is way more expensive. Ebay is full of Magic Arms too.

Would you run the clamp on the handle of my Manfrotto 500 or just run it in the spare cold shoe on my G40

Don't forget that you could also mount it from the 3/8" threaded hole on the side of the fluid head also. That's how I mount mine. Know your a lefty so that does complicate things a little bit though.

You can kinda see from this picture how mine is setup. If you had a longer arm, you could go above the camera so you could see it easier on your left side. Wish the 500 had that spot on both sides. I also added a quick release plate to the friction arm and leave the whole thing attached to the fluid head(it folds up nicely). Then I just have to snap on the monitor and connect my HDMI cable.

I can't exactly tell where yours is attaching. I wish there was one way that was way better than the rest. I need the monitor either dead on top or favoring the right side

So I can buy a magic arm that has the shoe mount on it and then just buy the clamps you posted the link to and I have the bases covered

Here's a picture showing where the arm attaches to the 500 head.

For some reason the text box didn't work, but it taks a 3/8" Threaded adapter.

If anyone orders any of those M6 to 1/4-20 adapters, let me know.

FYI, the 11" Magic Arm with clamp works really well on a monitor when using the super clamp and attaching it to the fluid head handle, right where it connects to the head itself. My monitor won't be here for a few more days, and then I'll take a pic. Here's the setup right now

Here's how I'm planning on running the monitor for now. It's actually pretty solid. Should have the monitor in a couple days, right at the beginning of season

I'm expecting to have to orientate the magic arm like this and it should work awesome. This magic arm I purchased works extremely well. I wish I had go that lucky on my hotshoe/cold shoe mount
