I literally have no clue. My kids have been saving their own money for sometime now and it's getting close. I am not, nor, have ever been a gamer. So which one is better between the two, and why?

I'll plead ignorance too, but my boys have been fans of the PS systems. Granted they are college aged now.

This is like asking hoyt or mathews. And I'm not sure which one is which.

Both the playstation and xbox are a lot alike now, so it is hard to say which is better. You will have to pay an extra cost to play against others online or use any of the online benefits for either system. Both systems can stream 4k video but Xbox can play 4k blu rays. Price is similar. Xbox tends to have more games available for the younger crowd but playstation has a lot of good games coming out in 2017. I have a playstation and love it, you can use it with Netflix, Amazon, or Spotify and you can play games while downloading new content in the background.

**I would buy a PS4 over an Xbox just to avoid the chance of the "ring of death" which basically means the Xbox's hard drive melted and it will never work again.

I personally have an xbox and really like it. I would agree though that its a hoyt vs mathews type thing. Either system will work well unless you are wanting a specific game to that console. If I had to buy one again I would still go with the xbox, but that is only because it is what I have always used previously. One big improvement for the xbox is they have backwards compatibility with older xbox 360 games. Only certain games are available, but it does add a lot more choices with previous titles still being available. Best of luck with your search!

If they have friends they plan on playing online with, match the console that their friends have.

I have an XBox1, only play a few games. Dropped my cable and use the game console for streaming Netflix and SlingTV, also is my Movie player.

I've always had playstation systems, but Xbox is just as good. Most of the games they'll want will be made for both systems.

It comes down to which gaming systems their friends have. You want to get whatever the majority has so they can play online together.

If they enjoy baseball, then PS is the way to go as MLB holds all rights to their game and it's only on PS. Xbox has like 2 different ones that are less than desirable. Other than that, put them in a hat and pull one out.

Unfortunately this is no longer true as you have to pay for online services with Playstation and Xbox now.

The new Xbox is being released in September I believe, definitely a much more powerful gaming rig in terms of its internal components. Able to support 4K gaming.
Playstation has a tried and true system, able to play 4K video, but not 4K games. There is a larger variety of games available for the PS4Pro.
Nice thing about Xbox is the games carry over from older platforms, so you don't need to buy a new console every time you want to play new games.
I'm not a Microsoft fan, but the new Xbox console is genius from a technological standpoint.
At the end of the day, you should take the ages of your kids into consideration and what games (with age restrictions) they would want to play. Depending on which console supports those games, go with that.
