Will Trail Cam Theft Become a Crime in PA?

Laws are good but like the article mentioned law enforcement does not have the time or the priority to investigate trail cam theft.

 

I guess I never thought about people using trail cameras on public land. I immediately assumed there was proof of trespassing with the theft, but that isn't the case. I couldn't make myself leave anything as valuable as a tree stand or trail camera on public land. Will be nice to see if it works in PA.

 

I would guess it will work as well as the laws that set speed limits.

 

^^Haha. It really does come down to how much time/energy the authorities have to enforce the law.

 

Isn't theft already illegal?

it should be a crime. stealing any time is a crime.

 

Only if you get caught.

Hell you almost have to have a camera watching the camera thats watching the wildlife just to cover your self and have proof. Maybe even a camera watching the 2nd camera.

 

I doubt it will help much, but it can't hurt. The few cams I've seen on public land left me thinking....either that guy can afford lots of cameras or he's stupid. The Scumbags around this state will haul out your ladder stand, so you can't be surprised they would take something that fits in a pocket.
It's really sad. There are lots of great people out there in the woods, but the percentage of Scum is higher than it should be.

I use trail cams from other guys in my areas as a tool. I purposely get my pic taken several times just to let them know I'm hunting in that area and they aren't alone. this only happens if I'm set up in that area before them. if they are there before me then I respectfully back out of that area and find a new spot. but stealing their camera is just stupid.

 

I wonder what percentage of cameras on public land get stolen. Assuming the cameras are actually seen by other people I'm willing to bet its over 50%.

 

I bring in an 8 foot section of climbing sticks and set most of my cameras 10 to 12 feet off the ground. It's a bit more work, and the pictures aren't as nice as that occasional close up,but it works. Once you get the angle right you can cover a wide area. I'll also make use of a downed tree or stump if it's in the area I need a cam set.

I would like to see a camera manufacturer make a two piece camera. One for the camera and one for the SD card. Have them connect wireless. If somebody found your camera, would they also be able to find which of the hundred trees in range you placed the 2nd half. Odds are they take your camera, you will still have the pictures of them.

It would also be nice for private land so you don't have to walk to the actual camera in order to pull your pictures.

 

Haha, yes, I often lose count of how many cameras I have watching other cameras. That are watching my main camera.

I just think the penalty should be much harsher if they are trying to send a message...

No. The camera sends the files wirelessly to a separate device that holds the SD card. The device can be hidden approx. 250 ft away from the camera.
