My son is 13 years old and shoots a 57 pound Hoyt ignite with a 403 grain arrow at about 240 feet per second the deer here are no bigger than 125 pounds. Could he get away with shooting a rage hyperdermic plus p or G5 strikers?
I think with that lower poundage, speed, and a lighter arrow any mechanical would be questionable. I used to shoot a very similar set up at 55 lbs with 420 grain arrow at 230 fps. I lost two deer because mechanicals would not deploy. Two deer double-lunged with complete pass-through. It was like shooting them with a field point. I would look at a fixed blade head. I'm in agreement. I would steer clear of any mechanical with that setup. Myself, I would set him up with Slick Tricks or Wasp Drone heads. In fact that's exactly what I did for my son. Sent from my VS500 using Tapatalk
My head choices for that set up would be: NAP Nitrons, QAD Exodus or Slick Trick Magnums. Can't go wrong with any of them.
I would nix the mech heads for that setup and go with slick trick or any good flying (after real life testing) fixed blade head.
Ive had good luck with magnus 4 blade stingers Plus if you bend a head or somehow break it theyll replace it for free.
If he really want to shoot mechanicals, Rage has the SS-series, which is designed for lighter lb's bows. I think they come in @85grns. I would recommend fixed though. You'll be looking momentum with the mechanicals for sure.
Hypodermic +p all day long with that setup. 400gr at 240fps is plenty for smaller mechanical heads. Don't let the fixed blade crowd dissuade you with their opinionated opinion, they hate mechanical heads period.

No problem. Sounds like a big boy. He's borderline on recommended kinetic energy for many mechanicals. Which means manufacturers would say you're good with a mechanical designed for such - NAP Killzone Low KE, or Rage Hypo +P. I'm pretty sure nap recommends minimum of 45 ft-lbs for their low ke. I'm not sure about Rage, but I bet it's the same. If the bow is tuned and he took disciplined shoot opportunities (range, angle, animal demeanor, etc.), it would probably work. That being said, I would try the NAP Thunderhead Nitro or similar fixed blade with modest cutting diameter. Most ideally, I would step him up to a faster bow if you could afford it. He could do that by getting lighter arrows I use a 375 grain arrow that's including my broad head muzzy trocar and I blew through my buck at 43 yards they flew right with my field points as long as you have sharp broadheads you don't need super heavy arrows for white tail idk everyone thinks you do if you were hunting elk or moose ya but not for whitetail unless you use no sharp mechanicals like nap or rage t3 are good sharp mechanicals and there is no deflection on angled shots unless you hit hard bone Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
