I am getting a Catahoula pup and plan on training her to track wounded deer. Any of you guys have experience in training a blood trailing dog? I have done a lot of research but seeing if anyone on here has any first hand experience.

    John,

agreed, this book is the 'bible' of training tracking dogs.
I had mixed luck with different breeds, the best tracker is our 9lb family chihuahua-wiener mix. It was able to folllow a deertrail 1.5 miles after swimming across a river. The worst tracker I was working with was a rescue beagle due to the subborn-ness and the tendency to get distracted by 'hot' life animal tracks.
Basically you follow the steps in the book, lay down 90'degree turns, aka 'checks' with big rewards (deer liver pieces) after each turn.
I will be glad to answer more questions,

    Joern

I've got a friend who I believe would be excited to talk with you about his experience. He knows his stuff and has traveled all over to do this. He's even been on a TV show or two. PM me if you're interested and maybe the two of you can get hooked up.

Make sure you know your state laws. Kansas just allowed the use of blood dogs so I will be working my Jack Russell's this year. Penny does good till a squirrel comes along. Years ago I had a beagle that was great at blood trailing deer just did not have Internet and cell phones so people could get a hold of you.
