Cameras help me set realistic limits on the size of deer I want to harvest. Along with keeping me engaged in deer hunting year around.
I use cams to get a general idea of deer numbers, buck to doe ratios, and to see whats out there buck wise.
Sometimes you set up on good sign but don't succeed, then put a cam on a spot and find out deer are using it when you're not there. That's either because they come in off times or only when you don't come to the stand. The latter means you have an access problem and need to enter the stand differently. The former means you are hunting it at the wrong time. I have had cams show me deer only use a certain spot mid to late morning, and cams have keyed me in that I am enter my stand the wrong way. I'm pretty good at scouting and setting up spots but no one guesses right all the time. Also, because you can see some pretty neat stuff. I set cams on scrapes set for 20 second videos. See some really cool deer behavior, and that's at least half the reason we hunt, isn't it?

If your wondering, He is not me, I am certain the admins could verify that He was referring to the butthurt that was laid down upon some.
I use them to help me do this........... Plus I enjoy seeing what's out there when I'm not. I do agree that you can't just set them up and expect to kill more deer as a result but it does help keep me motivated when I sit a few times and deer movement is low but I know I've seen a good one on the cam and he's around there somewhere. It also helps me determine when they start moving in daylight hours and that's when I start to increase my time in the stand. Plus it's just a lot of fun to check them and see what's out there.
I'm sure you do find them to be a waste of time. There is more to using a camera than just slapping one up on a tree. I have used them with success in killing several gross booners. Cameras are a great tool if you know how to use them and what to do with the information they collect. If you want to shoot the first deer you see each year, then cameras are a waste of your time. If you want to hunt specific animals, cameras give a distinct advantage. If you have access to lots of ground and want to chase the top end animals, they are a great tool to utilize.
