we all hear it HELP I NEED TO HUNT PUBLIC LAND THIS YEAR. so i'll started this to help you out. #1. scouting & finding good deer number go spot lighting to look for good number of deer in the feilds on reg bases use google earth to mark where you see the most deer. look for spot far into the woods the stepper the hill you need to go up the better. more creeks you cross the better (face it most guy are lazy and want to hunt close to their trucks) #2. weight go in light come out heavy what i mean is only take what you really need. knife, pen, calls only stuff you can fit into you're pockets hopefully you'll come out with a deer! #3. clothing i really like wind proof clothing cause you will stay longer at you're hunt location #4. tree stands i prefer hang on with climbing sticks i'll leave them in the tree BUT i lock they up with security chains (black) and even fold it flat to the tree so no one can use it if they do find the spot. if you follow #1 you'll also have better chances of those stands coming back home with you..lol #5. timing you're hunts i found out that if you hunt monday-thursday is you're best way to see the most deer why. most guy are working and the small games guys don't hunt after work because of time! feel free to add you're tip on hunting public land

Pretty spot on to me. Got this guy on cam due to turkey season. Found this spot and remembered to come back for deer season. He's no giant, but for GA public land he is. 2.5 miles in with hang on and sticks. No locks for security, but trail cam is.
Good tips to the OP. But I will add I have found some dandy spots fairly close to the road but have no nearby parking area. So, I've parked with the crowd and simply gone in a different direction on foot. Long walk per se but far easier drag with a dead deer, since you can drag it under 100 yards to the road, leave it hidden, and get back to your truck. One other thing I'd add is hunt the narrowest travel corridors with fresh sign. Tight, tight, tight, edgy areas. Don't get hung up on dropping acorns or any other one food source.
Where I hunt this is the case. I hunt close to the road because the "non-lazy" hunters walk past me, down to the creek, cross over and up the other side. This takes them 2-3 miles back in. When I see them go down that path, I have to be ready. Usually within 5-10 minutes deer sneak out of the thick stuff and right back in front of me.
point taken ,but i hunt in pa with lot of other hunters (lazy types) so the further the better! one imported piece i never leave home with out is a game cart!
I can only speak to the public ground I hunt in louisiana but the best tip I can give is practice, practice,practice shot placement because you will only get one chance and if you miss the buck your done you will never see him again that season. But I hunt louisiana deer so yea my deer are super pressured.
I hunted a piece of public this week and call me lazy I was 100 yards from my truck and 60 yards off the road and I saw more than 30 deer in 3 days. Hunt the sign and like what others have said know where other people are hunting and use them to your advantage. When I scout public I also look where others hunters have been and could be.
I have found that this is even more true than the going deep rule of thumb. My best spot and the only spot I consistently have bucks on cam and where I have taken my only public land doe you only have a 5 minute walk to from the road. But there is not really a spot to park I get dropped off or park a 1/4 down the road dont overlook spots that are hard to get too bc of parking restrictions as well! Lotsa these tips are great guys.
Public Land Hunting Tips: 1. Pull any reflector markers off trees left by others, don't need that crap around especially if it leads to an area you like to hunt. 2. Hunt on weekdays if at all possible OR a Saturday, once the googs fill the woods on Saturday and leave their scent and spook all the deer, Sunday will be pointless. 3. If your unfamilar with an area and walk to harder to get to spots because of thick brush, ducking under branches, etc..Look out for stand scrape marks on the trees, chances are if it was well off the beaten trail it probably is a decent spot. Keep an eye out for older broken down treestands, people that took the time to build them way back when, didn't do so because it was a bad spot. Good luck P.S Don't steal anyones stand or cams..If you see a stand already set up, just say out loud "DON"T MIND IF I DO" and climb right in..
