So... This is a first for me. I think I've encountered my first "nanny doe." Tonight at sunset a doe with 2 fawns walks into the neighbors bean field 130 yards out. The doe immediately looks my way. She starts coming closer but on high alert. She gets to 70 yards and stops... Stomping. This entire time I didn't move an inch and the wind wasn't blowing her way at all. My entry was the complete opposite direction. I'm amazed that she knew I was there. I've never experienced a deer do that before. Trying to figure out how she knew I was there. She eventually ran into the woods and right at dark started to blow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dang 4 mi is a long way in the woods...we tracked a big buck that was hit back. Guts and one lung. Amazing blood trail. For about 400 yds. Then pin drops on hands and knees. We called a guy with dog that picked it up and ran all the way to the River. We were hunting an island on the Mississippi. Needless to say that was the end of the track job. I'll bet you that S.O.B. made it to the other side.
Last season a doe and her fawn (that I passed 4 times) finally got downwind of me and blew at me for 10 min straight. I swore her pass was up, next chance I got she was as good as chili. She finally flagged and ran off and I just knew my hunt had to be over. Everything within a square half mile had to hear that bitc4. Then I heard something in the brush in front of me.... Out pops this little 8pt 2 y.o. we had on Camera all year. I drew back on him for practice at 15 yds. But he actually came to see what she was blowing at! It worked for me not against me. I could have easily killed him.
You gave it a valiant effort. The best thing you can do to redeem is to get back after it and put one on the ground....just make sure it ends up in the freezer next time.
They are definitely tough creatures for sure!! That's where the cut bean field came in to play. There's no way I could keep up that long in the timber.
Unfortunately that was not my luck and nothing else snowed up. I killed an 8 pnt early season and haven't had any luck since
Been set up for s while had 2 deer i believe move threw before light. 34deg here in SE WI and 0mph wind gorgeous morning.
Spike just walked right under me and couldn't believe it but he grunted twice. Clear as a bell, not too loud but for sure two short grunts.
Good call, thermals drop down at the end of the day. I was also thinking maybe the doe was inside the Woodline scanning for danger before she came out, and maybe picked up on your movement before you even knew she was there. If she is a nanny doe, it makes sense Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Good sit this morning , no action, camera on the other side of property told me the deer were there this morning lol not the side I was on . Good luck everyone
