Hi guys I'm up here in central MN, my property is along the river and with the recent rains is completely under water along with my clover and turnip plots. Flooding is pretty common in the spring and usually kills my plots but rarely does it flood this late in the year. The river will be down soon and my plan is to go in and spread some seed, I am looking for the fastest growing seed and wondering if anyone has had any suggestions. Some options I'm considering are EH shot plot and throw and grow and AK lights out. Thanks for any info.
Just get cereal grains Winter Oats, Winter Rye and Winter Wheat. They'll pop quick and have fresh growth.
I will not be able to access it with equipment it will be extremely wet will they grow well if I just top seed it? I know some of those grains are suppose to be covered 1/4-1/2 inch.
Winter wheat will grow on black top if it gets water, pretty close to no till, heck oats will sprout like that too.
The only problem with that is you don't know what you're getting and there's both winter and spring oats. The spring oats will winter kill. Oats also don't always broadcast germ as well because of the larger seed without incorporation.
We've had good broadcast luck with Winter Oats, but definitely have to seed heavy and still try to roll over them during a rain.
You're welcome. Things I've had good luck with on the cheap though that are similar are bird seed mix that's milo, millets and sunflowers and oil seed sunflower bird seed. I have a couple of worm factories here at home and a while back I threw some old buggy bird seed ground hash in there for the red wigglers, I now have sprouted seed in the worm bins that looks like cat hair, lol. I figured the germ was long dead in that stuff....not by a long shot. I'll keep it in the dark and it'll be okay though. Worms seem to love it.
