Salt creek, Banner Marsh, Marshall SFWA Duck Ranch Unit, and I think Rice Lake.

Thats how its going to be for me now too. This will be 2nd year (1st full season, got in late last year) and I can't wait to get out but balancing work, deer, and duck will be interesting.

I am indeed married. She already told me I can't pick it up in full this year but I can try it out. I'm borrowing a 12ga from my buddy when we go. I'm definitely curious to see how I like it. How many shells do you go through in one sit (obviously depends on how good of a shot one is but in general...)? I bought 125 and am hoping it will last for 2 hunts.

Here's an analogy for you. it will be like just trying a little heroine to see if maybe you might like it...yes it's that addictive. All joking aside, it takes that one day, that one day when those honkers or greenheads or whatever the species might be come in on a string making a deafening raucous with their feet down, wings back pedalling, your fingers gripping your gun so tight their gonna go numb waiting for someone to call the shot. Then the barrage is over. After the explosion of 12ga. 3" #4's minimum. hopefully you hear and feel the splashes or thuds of dead birds hitting the water or ground with feathers floating slowly behind them. Then as an added bonus you might get to see the dog get his fix if you have one with you. So yea it's ok. When that day comes you will be hooked for life, Mark my words :)

and I would bring at least 2 boxes of shells. 3 or 4 is a better number. that way you know for sure you have a good amount. alot of hunts I don't fire a shot. sometimes when it's windy and I'm off I'll go through a couple boxes

I've never used more than a half a box of shells on a single hunt in the fall. Spring I've used 6 in one day.

^^^This^^^ better to have more than you need. I remember the first goose I ever shot, I crumpled it like an old tin can and it landed at my feet and that was it. I'm tellin ya, the first time you go and you get that good hunt like mentioned before, when those honkers or mallards are back pedaling, feet down into the X at 15 yard and the shot gets called and you pop up and start shooting. Man-o-man it's like nothing you've ever experienced and it is SWEET! You'll see, it's game over after that lol

I know it's been asked previously (maybe not this year) but what is everyone running for spreads?

I start small and increase my numbers as the season progresses. I also don't put my best hand down first. Early season birds don't need to see your best stuff so I save that for the ones that have their P.H.D's. For geese I use Bigfoot on everything water and field. then I have a dozen Dave Smith full bodies for when they are wise. I find the majority of the time a dozen excellent full bodies in a field beats 5 or 10 dozen ok decoys. Ducks I do the same. Use my older stuff first in smaller numbers increase spread as season progresses then start pairing them up at the end.

Hey all! Hoping to get more involved in waterfowl this year. My husband is really big into it, but I enjoy archery - so I usually am in a tree stand. But, with not showing horses this year, I'll have the first month for goose open.

Last year, some may remember, he went to Cape Cod on a sea duck hunt. He got a banded duck and then ended up getting three different ones mounted. I'll have to share a picture when I go home. They turned out great. Will also add, I thought they tasted great! I did let them soak longer than most, but I thought they were much better then the duck around here. I will be going on that hunt this year - it's the end of December.

Depends on where I'm at. Hunting in the Dakotas I'll run 4-5 dz duck decoys max. Hunting at the lease near a big refuge we'll run 400-500 minimum with a mix of duck and goose. Hunting big water 10 12 dz all duck. My snow goose spread is 850.
I'm not particularly brand loyal, whatever I can find the best deals on.

Wow, for puddle ducks here 18-24 decoys would be a huge spread.

Haha me too. I don't hunt divers, but most I've ever used for ducks is 3 dozen, honkers is 10 dozen and snows is 105 dozen.

That will work in most situations. we never go over 4 or 5 dozen unless we are on the river. alot of times we carry in 1 or 2 dozen on public ground or in our little pot hole spots off the creek. We just try to mimic what we see the live birds doing. On the river you can suck them in from miles away with big spreads
