Columbus Day Buck October 13, 2014 Barry County, MI near Battle Creek or Kalamazoo Evening hunt Hunting a ESE wind for a stand in a big white pine that overlooks a big prairie fen along a creek to the South and is on the South side of a red oak ridge that also happens to be a nice funnel between two ag fields. The part of the fen to the South is 100 yards to the creek to the South, and the ridge /funnel is about 100 yards wide running East and West directly North is a bean Field and 100 yards West is corn field. The ridge connects 3 bedding areas and can be hard to hunt because of swirling winds. E, SE or ESE winds are best. I hunted opening day October 1st about 300 yards West of this stand because all of September every deer on my farm was hitting an old White Oak that was dropping early. October 1st I saw nothing. White Oak was done. October 13th was a different story. I walked the bottom of the oak ridge to get to the stand and the ground was covered in great big red oak acorns. There was also two fresh scrapes right under my stand. I remember texting my brother-in-law that I'd never felt so confident in a stand location in October. Had a couple doe come in from the Northeast early afternoon. Then about an hour before dark I had a 5 pt come directly from the Southeast came right underneath me and fed up the ridge, the 15 minutes later a little 1.5 yo 8pt came exact same direction and did same exact thing. They worked their way over the ridge out of sight so I decided to do a couple grunts from the call. Next thing I know there is a 3.5 yo directly SW of me at 40 yards looking for the buck that made that grunt. The trail he was on took him broadside directly South at 27 yards. Drew back and he stopped in the wide open and thwack. Sent a grim reaper through him. He wasn't huge probably 125". I was happy with him. I don't have any pics on my phone. I think he was coming off his bed which I believe was about 250 yards Southwest of me in a thick patch of brush out in that Fen. He was probably going to hit those scrapes at dark but I called him out early. That's my only buck in that time period, but I've had some encounters during that time here and there through the years.
I'm in the same boat Marauder. I'm usually just killing time in October. It isn't for lack of trying I assure you. Looking forward to see what the data shows.
alright here we go. I seem to do the best in the middle of october - however, i think it coincides with the harvest times in the area. all of these deer are from shepherdstown, wv, in the same tree. open field, with a slight depression leading from an alfalfa or corn field (depending on the year), to a thicket along the river. 1- 10-20-10 8:00 am. 3.5 year old. dressed at 160 lbs. walking through alone View attachment 68594

10/10/15 Idabel, OK Morning hunt 6.5 yo 7 point On acorns/travel About 830 in the morning multiple bucks came through, most being younger. I grunted and he turned and started making a scrape, then froze. After another minute or 2 of being unable to see him I grunted again, after which he made multiple scrapes and walked in to a tiny opening Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Location: Nebraska Afternoon hunt October 16th, 2014 It was the best day of hunting Ive ever had.......actually it was only 2 hours. I had both my kids (7yr old twins at the time) in a double treestand and I was off set in a hang on stand facing north. We put the decoy out and did a little rattling and I was actually watching the buck with the kicker about 250 yds away when the 8 pt I shot came in all bristled up wanting to fight. It was great as my kids watch him come in from about 100 yds away and he made a couple scrapes on his way in. Now I just need to seal the deal on the other buck in the trail cam pic! Killed this buck in a transition area from feeding to bedding in the morning around 7:30 on October 6th of 2012, Saltsburg Pa. Sorry for the upside down pics, I'm notorious for it for whatever reason pics on my phone upload upside down 8 out of 10 times, any ideas?
