Updated (1st Turkey Season on the property) We had a blast over the last few weeks preparing for turkey season. I have continued to run the feeders after deer season finished up in hopes that the turkeys would move in and stay on the property. It worked great and I have had tons of awesome pics of several different birds over the last several weeks. Yesterday couldn't have turned out any better. My boy and I made our way to the hardwood flat that I had our blind set up on. He was exhausted from staying up a little too late but I promised him he could take a nap once we got into the blind. Once we set up he quickly dozed off. The woods came alive with the sounds of gobbles just after sun up. There were several birds but they seemed to be pretty far off. I gave a series of yelps and waited for a response. For a hour or so this was way things went. I decided to shut up for awhile and just see what happened. I waited about 15 minutes and was about to call again when I spotted 2 hens coming in to our decoy. I nudged my boy and woke him up. I told him to be ready for a tom to come in at any time. Just as I said those words he showed up. He strutted right in front of our blind at 15 yards. One shot later and here is the end result. Needless to say, this has been an awesome opening to the 2014 turkey season. This property has really paid off and I couldn't be happier about owning it. I have continued plans to put a hunting "shack" and still have to doze in a road from the top of my ridge to the bottom access road. I look forward to updating this post as those things happen.
Congrats on your new property, and please send pics as you go it would be cool to follow your progress. Good for you!!!!!!
Since I hadn't been on in quite awhile I thought I'd add a long update on what we've been able to do with the property since my last update. We've had some great times out there and things are getting better every year. Take a look at the attached pics and see what you think. Finished the road out with a dozer to give better access with a vehicle now. Got pics of a nice one and shot him later with the rifle. Most importantly got the kids out and my son killed his first deer two falls ago and his first rack buck this past season. Found I have a hog problem........built a hog trap. Found I have a snake problem! Built a really nice blind overlooking the food plot. Can't wait to take the kids out this season to hunt out of it. Finally, found my first shed in the plot.
