There is a place called Lucky 7 in Princeton that sells really good bear bait for a good price if you need it.
I will see what I can dig up for trail camera pics here shortly. We use 55 gallon plastic drums, and cable them to a tree with about a 6' length of cable so they can move the barrel around. About 2/3 of the way up the barrel we cut roughly an 8" hole to dump the bait in and also for the bears to reach in and pull bait out. For bait we use pastries, cakes, pies, and donuts. Occasionally we will have a bag of bread or a bag of bagels, but the bears prefer the sweets. Molasses also works great as an attractant. Here in Maine we can get molasses in bulk at a local livestock feed store. Pour a couple gallons on and around the barrel so when the bears come in they will get it on their paws and track it off with them when the leave, spreading the scent out. We try to pick our spots in areas where there is dense forest cover, and also a good spot for a treestand within shooting range of whatever weapon you plan on hunting with. We also try to keep the sun at our back at sunset so that way if a bear does come in and looks up at the hunter in the stand they are also looking into the sun. Be prepared to stay put in the stand until legal shooting light ends. I can't count how many times over the years a bear has come in with less than 5 minutes to go of legal light. We also try to work it out so the hunter will get dropped off on the stand and picked up after dark. The bears hear the vehicle pull up, bait the bait and then drive away and that is the dinner bell to them. Little do they know there is a hunter there waiting for their arrival!

Bernie Outdoors The people on here who said it is competitive are absolutely right, but if you minimize the number of times you bait, putting out lots of GOOD bait, you can hide what you are doing and get on a daylight bear. Location is the key. Barrels were mentioned, but barrels are only legal on private land in Minnesota. While it is very competitive, instances of tampering are rare, but they do happen. Keep a low profile so it isn't obvious where you are tramping in all the time, don't drive an ATV right to your bait site, etc. Good luck and let us know how you do. Bear baiting is addictive.
