How old do you think this deer is? I think he's probably a 2.5 year old, but what do you guys think? Also, look at his shoulder, not sure what that wound is from, sparring, or possibly a gunshot wound? What'cha think? Thanks, Rylan
Looks like he was quartering away a little for someone and he wasn't as far as they thought! Lol. Hard to tell but he's definitely been trying to scratch/rub it with his antlers Also, is it me or does that deer's legs look really short? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yep, 2.5 sounds right. I'm thinking he was grazed from a missed shot opp, but I don't think that would account for the blood on his antlers. He wouldn't be fighting this time of year, so that's a mystery.
The blood is from him rubbing the wound with his own antlers. I've seen and had pictures of bucks scratching between their shoulder blades with their antlers. I'm still baffled at the short legs. I notice you're from the Carolinas. I'm assuming eastern NC or SC? That explains the small stature of the deer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Actually I'm in very west NC. Right next to Tennessee. We really don't have a lot of bucks on our property, we just bought it a few years back and about a year ago started to implement QDMA techniques. Plus, most of our neighbors have no earthly idea what QDMA is, and pretty much just "shoot anything with horns." Could that possibly explain the short legs? Possibly some recessive traits coming out because we don't have a lot of deer? Just a thought.
Not sure shooting small racked immature deer is going to lead to a genetic mutation that would be noticeable in a lifetime. Also QDMA is not for everyone and believe it or not some people just want to shoot deer, I think that is part of the problem with QDMA anyone who is a member thinks anyone who isn't an idiot and they are ruining others hunting opportunities.
Another thought... It might be just the camera angle. When we've shot deer off our property we haven't really noticed any short legs. Looking back on the rest of the pictures that seems to be the case, unless we just had a sub-species of dwarf legged deer in that area of the property
Yeah, it was just a just a thought. I really agree with you on this. My main reason to hunt is to just be out in nature, and maybe get to see a deer and fill the freezer. We've just used QDMA to improve the deer on our property just because it's good for them, not because we only want to shoot big deer. I appreciate your opinion.
