What part of MD? I hunt all private, but could possibly still be of some help. What questions do you have?
I'm located in Bowie, but I've traveled from Charles County to the Eastern shore. I've hunted or hiked and fished a lot of places, but only saw little evidence of deer. But has anyone used cameras left overnight? What's the best way to mark trees and paths to and from stands?
Anytime you leave cameras out on public or private you run the risk of them walking off. You can climb up and hang them high angling down to help prevent that but it's still a risk. As far as marking trails, reflective thumb tacks are the best way I've found. Again I hunt private so you will need to check the regs for the specific public lands you hunt about the legalities of leaving stands/cameras out. Some places it's ok others are not. I'm not sure how many guys we have here from SoMd, but here is a link to a local site with a lot of public land guys in your area. http://www.marylandwhitetail.com
I'm from Harford county and I hunt turkey on Millington WMA. It's pretty good. I have heard of people deer hunting there but I have enough deer on my farm. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
Yep. I got it Saturday after I sold my No Cam. I couldn't believe I got 1175 bucks for it with everything. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
I hunted public last year and couple other times when i didnt have private to hunt. I hunted in frederick. My advise is to scout as much as you can late season. If theres snow on the ground walk as much as you can and note where deer tracks are. Install a gps app like huntstand and mark high travel areas on your phone. You have to be willing to put in the time scouting to have good sucess on public and be willing to go where most others dont. Think outside the box. Think where most people go and the routes they will go to hunt. One of the best spots i had on public was 350 yards from the parking area on the edge of the public land. i found that most people would walk the field edge to get toward the middle of the area as it was the easiest to walk. Well i went perpendicular to the fields threw all the thicket and found many trails. I killed 4 deer out of that spot but had to walk threw pricker bush thickets to get there. Find the thick cover and areas that most hunters will not think about or is too thick for most. That is where most deer will be. Where most people wont go. Good luck
I also would avoid using marking tape or reflective tacks as that could lead another hunter to your spot
