Well today I went to a stand I just hunted 2 days ago, now that it got enough light I saw a deer laying 35 yds away dead. Got down to check it out and it was a doe fawn. No holes or blood from mouth or ***. No broken legs. no hair missing like she got hit by a car. This is more than a half mile from any roads. She was still warm! No foam from mouth. Like she just laid down and never woke up again. You think it would be worth contacting dnr to have her tested? Very strange to me.

Yeah, that's weird. I would call them and let them know. I doubt they will do anything other than thank you for informing them, but at least you are doing your part.

Well I emailed my area biologist. He said from my description, the age of her and time of year it eliminates the only 2 things that he would be worried about. That is cwd and ehd. He said could be one of dozens of things. Nothing he said would harm other deer or livestock. I still won't consume her though, not worth it in my eyes. Probably will get down and drag her to a camera I have 80 yds away. Might at least get some predator pics.

If you can't visibly see anything wrong with the deer, I'd suspect EHD, but that's purely a guess. Typically with CWD you can tell that there's something wrong with the deer by it's appearance. You might want to have the DNR haul it away for testing because that helps them when doing research. If you open the mouth, does the tongue look swollen or discolored, anything under the tongue? Those are usually signs of EHD.

He's farther north than I've ever heard of EHD being, plus it's late in the year for it. Pretty strange.

Well I got down at noon because I wanted to move one of my stands a little farther in off the field. at this time I inspected her again. Now she had a small amount of orangish blood coming from here mouth. Hardly any. Otherwise she is in normal appearance. I did contact the dnr biologist with this new info. I haven't heard back yet. Makes me a little uneasy but the dnr acts like it is no big deal. She was about 10 yds from a creek. I hope it is an isolated incident.
