PIC OF BUCK ON PAGE 4!!!! Bigger pic on page 7.

I wanted to share this today because it may have cost a friend of mine a world class whitetail.....there's a difference between a deer "going down" and "laying down" after the shot.

"Going down" is when a deer crashes and is kicking on the ground. Give him 20 minutes and he'll be dead right there.

"Laying down" is when a deer lays down, like he's bedding down. It's a controlled movement, not just tipping over. Even if he lays his head down and it looks like he hasn't moved in 10 minutes, don't just go rushing up there, he may not be dead.

In addition to that, replay the shot and consider the variables to determine what you've hit...Steep angle and just one lung? Quartering away shot and hitting liver and just one lung? Penetration of arrow and just one lung?

Those were the variables of my buddy's scenario on his buck. He shot it at 10 yards, watched run away and lay down 80 yards away in the middle of a field. It put it's head down and laid motionless for a while. He got down and started making his way to him. Gone. They're still looking and are calling in the dogs. Hopefully they find him and I can show you some pics of an absolute giant.

Moral of the story....unless you see him crash, give it time.

This is a great scenario to consider. I think it takes a bit of experience on the hunters part to make the best decisions. :tu:

Yes. Too bad he didn't quietly back out after the shot and go back later. Probably would have find it in its bed. Must have been seriously hurt to bed down in sight. After he jumped it, did he back off? Should have gone home for the night. Maybe it would have bedded down again quickly if not pursued. Best of luck to him. Really hoping he finds it.

My buddy shot a ten pointer, a one lung hit and they jumped it a few hours later, backed out went back next day found it but it was still warm that was 24 hrs after the shot. one lung hits are the worst to track hopefully your buddy got liver or gut kinda sounds that way if he bedded up quick. hopefully pics are on the way.

It's going to be a while boys. He's not releasing any pics until all his T's are crossed and I's dotted. It's that kind of buck.

Can't say where yet. Score should be north of 250". That's my guess at least.

    No Pic's yet?
I meant to ask last night what part of the state he was in to see if he needed help. I know, a day late and a dollar short.
