Today I was in a climber that I can only get about 8 feet up in this tree, how high are your stands usually, how low have you been and still seen success?
If im in a climber i like to climb 20-25 ft.. at 8 ft you would need real good cover which is hard to find on a tree thats climbable. Have to rely on other trees around you
I don't like heights, so I have 6 ladders, and not one of them is over 11 feet. With most of them at 10'.
12-20 feet. Depends on location and he tree that works for that spot. Have a tree seat as well if I need to be lower.
I use 20' sticks most of the time, so that puts me around 16' to my feet, 21 to my head when standing. Going to be trying a 21' millennium ladder stand when I get a refund Im waiting on, I assume thats to the shooting rail. I don't do heights well, but slowly trying to get higher.
My stands are usually up about 12-18 feet depending on the cover around it and any elevation differences between my tree and where the deer trails are. I once killed a 145" buck from only 8 feet up a tree as overhanging branches would not allow me to go higher.
Thanks for all the replies guys! It just feels so weird to me being 8 feet up, usually I'm hanging my sets about 20 feet up, felt stupid even sitting that low but I'll try it again in the morning
I had mine at 12 to start with but raised it to about 18. I just did not have enough to cover at 12 feet. Depends on the tree and what is around u to break up ur outline. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Here lately I have been going up 25-30 just so that I don't have to worry about the deer smelling me as much. But that is only when my set up allows that. Normally 22 feet from the ground to my platform.
I seldom go above 16 feet. A lot of guys over estimate how high they are. If you are higher than 16 or 18 feet, you are giving yourself a tough shot angle.
I like to be anywhere from 18 to 25 feet up.. 30 seems a bit overboard IMO. only reason I'd go any lower is if I found a dynamite spot that didn't have any trees I could get higher in with my climber and I'd still want to be up atleast 15 ft. if at all possible. I got my buck last year from bout 15 ft. up with little to no cover, but I put myself on the back side of the tree from where the deer generally traveled, which worked great.. only reason I'd go any higher is if I needed to for more cover or I was on the lower side of a hill or bank and didn't want to be eye level with the deer if they were on the upper side of the hill or bank.. my ladder stands are all either 18-21 ft. ladder stands.
I have an honest respect for heights.....the thought of falling is terrible, but I also love bow hunting and realize that the higher you go, the better the odds. So, I just started wearing fall protection gear. Nothing worse than being tense in the stand with your knees shaking, and afraid to even get out of the seat and stand up. With a safety harness all those fears are alleviated, and I am able to concentrate on the task at hand.......shooting old mossy horns. Good points made about the shot angle being bad if you get too high, and I realize that plenty of deer are shot from the ground, but I feel naked and exposed any lower than 20 feet.
