Looking for something that is reliable and has a versatile beam pattern/brightness. Would be used for blind sets, tracking and field dressing. I have plenty of spot/tactical handhelds but looking to get something handsfree.

So many options out there with a variety of price points, not looking to break the bank but fear the old "ypu get what you pay for" situations as well.

Prefer to stay away from clip on lights.

    What's everyone use?

I have a fenix and a black diamond, both work well and have lasted several years without issue.

I have the Nite Ize Inova. Like $35. Works awesome! Super bright, 3 AAA batteries and you can adjust brightness. Highly recommend it.

This is what I use.. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Generic-20143-Bushnell-TRKR-Multi-Color-Headlamp-250-Lumens/42424429

I really like it... works great for what I want. This will be the 2nd year using it for hunting and I use it just around the house as well. I have seen others that cost more that I didnt think were much better, if any. Best thing is they sell them at your local walmart and they dont break the bank..

I will add too that it is comfortable and not overly bulky... both a big plus in my book.

Cree head lamps on ebay. $15 for 1000lm. Super bright and cheap. I give them out for x-Mas gifts too

I just got the Cabela's Alaskan Guide dual power headlamp. It's got three red LEDs I use for walking in/out, and a 185 lumen white led that I'll use for blood trailing. It comes with a rechargeable battery pack, but will also run off AAA's.i used it to walk through couple miles (literally) of standing corn last weekend and overall it's great. It very compact as well which I wanted so it would easily fit into a specific pocket on my pack.

I also second fenix and the black diamond. I have a fenix tactical light that is normally handheld but will clip to a hat brim. Been on the same battery since 2013, and it gets used.

My black diamond rechargeable is awesome! Good battery life, very bright, and best of all uses a droid-style charging cord so I've always got a charger handy in my car or at home.

    So many to choose from.

Starting to lean towards this one. Already have a couple 18650 batteries and charger for a small handheld.

Next question I guess would be red/green lighting. Do any of you wihout it regret not getting one with it, and reversely, do any of you that opted to go with it find it not as useful? Like I said earlier, I would be using it for blind sets, so would probably have it on entering a potential stand site.

I have had good luck with Princeton Tec.
Yes I do like a light with red or green in it. I prefer red as I can see it better. It also saves on battery life

I love mine made by Cyclops. I would encourage whatever you buy to make sure it has various light options. A soft red or green light in the dark mornings is preferred by myself, I don't wanna cast tons of light out there...but then a high beam strength main light for tracking or other times needed.

Petzl TACTIKKA RGB has my vote. At around $40 it is an exceptional buy.

This is what I ended up going with.

Was harder than it looked, was looking for something that would use 16850 batteries but it seemed only one had the red/green option. Nitecore, but I didn't like some of the reviews for the price.

Seemed, to get a good spotlight function you had to sacrifice the red/green and to get the red/green you had to sacrifice both spotlight and battery type.

The nice thing about Amazon is their return policy, I'll give it a whirl and see how it does. Guess when tracking I normally have a couple handhelds on me anyhow, so throw isn't as important.

Mainly want handsfree use for fieldresssing and set-up/tear downs.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, much appreciated
