    Things are looking up :)

Here are a few pics from the first camera I put out about week and a half ago. I wasn't even going to worry with this spot since it was small and there was cotton planted there for the first time ever. I have just never had much luck hunting around it....Anyway, I said I would put a cam and throw out some corn to just see what was around. Needless to say I was surprised to find that 11-12 different bucks visited this site along with a handful of does and 3 coyotes.... Based on the pics I know at least 2 are mature and I would gladly put my buck tags on them. Definitely some respectable dear for my area...There are bigger around but few and far between... It really does!! I am pretty fortunate with an abundance of hunting land I just don't have the time to scout that much with 3 little kids. This is one of the smaller farms I hunt and probably was going to leave it be for this year but not now...Hopefully all my other spots have some of the same action as well. Unfortunately I have a lot of land to hunt that ain't worth hunting if that makes sense. I was tickled to say the least

    Help?? New Ground

I acquired permission to bow hunt this farm past Winter. However I was asked to stay out until after they finished logging, planting and spraying. Needless to say last week I got the green light just 3 weeks before season opener. Here in SE NC the land for the most part is relatively flat. I don't have a lot of ridges, saddles, benches etc ...to hunt. This particular farm has some unique elevation changes due mostly to the creeks and swampy area that run through it. I currently have a couple spots already picked out but nothing along the Kenansville Bypass that borders it. Along the bypass is a mix of hardwoods as well as some pines. There is a nice ridge that runs along it as well. For those that have experience with mixed terrain and mixed elevation, I was hoping you might could take a look at a map I made and tell me if an area along the bypass jumps out more than the rest. Also anywhere you see in yellow that jumps out would be helpful...I wanted to cruise it all the way down but it is to close to the season opener to be wondering though there...Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!!

PS...Sorry for the small image...I have tried snipping and exporting the map from my ArcGIS software and it will not show up any bigger

Here's where I'd check out. That field that the bypass splits, the top of it hits the woods and the woods form a choke point there between the 3 larger sections of woods. Those woods are also on a ridge above the field so if the deer are going from the south woods to the east woods, they should follow that ridgeline.

The maps are kind of small for me... And I have 0 knowledge on hunting ridges/elevation changes. 100% of my hunting is centered around flat AG land with small pockets of woods.

Most excellent teammates, you're blowing up my phone!

It's s-ELK-tember and I head to Idaho a week from today!
In the mean time I have a looooong list of things to get done including final plot work on my home property and one of my leases. Saturday is our annual work day for the big lease so we'll be checking all stands for safety, cleaning wasp nests out of blinds, spraying and over seeding all of the plots, picking rocks, trimming stand locations, and doing last minute maintenance on bedding areas.
Probably won't get much of a chance to check in before I return from the mountain so don't wait for me to get this party started! 8-)

Update*** Spent 9 hours on a tractor today discing fields. Got about another 6 hours to do tomorrow then the club food plots will be ready to plant. I ordered seed for my secret spots. Hoping to plant those next week as well. As long as we get some rain in the next week, that will give me a month of some decent growth as long as the deer dont mow it down waiting on acorns to drop. Off to bed though. been up since 330 am and doing it again tomorrow!

TOMORROW! In 22 hours I will be sitting in my stand. Bow at my side, arrow in nock, patiently waiting for my hit list bucks. It's going to be an awesome season and I hope I bring in some points for us!
