I'm going to be using my last two hypodermics this season. Last buck I shot I have no clue what happened besides I hit him, but I didn't see any blood in the snow. Let's hope for better results this season.

I'm not sure if you can judge a broadhead on a hit that you don't know where it went. I question that you even hit him if you couldn't find a single drop of blood in snow. Even on a terrible hit, with little penetration or a flesh wound, you would still find a drop here and there as long as you could stay on his tracks.

I hit him. There was hair on the ground and my arrow was stuck in him as he ran and stopped 25 yards away and took off again short after that.

And it was a 8 yard chip shot. I could shoot a nickel at 8 yards.

That's odd. Even if you hit him in the shoulder at 8 yards it should have busted through. At least I know my ol thunderheads would. That was kind of my worry with expandables.

I was using a different bow at a lower poundage though. I'm sure you won't have a problem.

That brings up a new question. If I'm pulling 70# and let's say my bow shoots 300fps, will I have a problem with the Rage expanding at short range (like 5 yards)?

I don't think you would. The collar that the hypodermic uses shouldn't have a problem opening at short distance. Once I over tightened one and had to move it to the next spot.

The head opens on impact and the blades open with penetration entry wound should be close to full diameter of the head. If you are pulling 70 pounds with an arrow 450 grains or above a rage will penetrate shoulder blades you won't pass completely thru but the head will stick out the other side. With a mechanical the harder you hit matters much more than how fast you hit.

Imo rage hypodermic is the best head they ever designed. I took a freezer doe at 15 yds clean pass thru she only went 30 yds. The main thing I like about the heads are the practice head and if you can get it to hit where your putting your pin you can be sure when you put the real head on you can bet it will perform well if not better than the practice head. The real rage heads are somewhat pricey but durable sharp and worth every penny.

Yeah, the practice heads are a big selling point for me.

Yeah it was the little cutter blade with a rubber band to retain the blades...

I shoot hypodermics with 400 grain arrows, at 70 pounds. I shot a doe last year at 46 yards and had a complete pass through, even stuck up in the ground on the other side. She was shot right behind the shoulder though.
I also shot a buck last year at 37 yards quartering to me, sliced the entry shoulder and buried all the way to the fletching in the deer. The tip was the only thing sticking out of the other side.
Those are the only 2 deer I have shot with hypodermics and so far I am impressed. We will see what they do on more deer this season!

I've been using mechanicals forever and Rage heads since they came out a decade ago. I still use the originals and have never had any issues whatsoever. The hypodermic model looks legit and probably better than the standard. It's all personal preference though. All it takes is one mishap to label them junk and get a bad review but the most important thing these heads do for me is give me confidence. I know whatever I shoot with these heads, accurately, it will die quickly.

Exactly, mo matter what the broad head, it's all about shot placement.

Here's the thing with big cut expandable heads that no one ever mentions and shops never say to customers... Your bow has to have enough balls to shove 2+" of Blade through an animal... I've seen WAY to many guys complain about mechanical heads not getting pas throughs then you see their setup, an old "slow" round wheel bow drawing 50lbs and maybe hitting 210fps through the chrono. Or a young kid pulling 40lbs with a 24" draw length that just HAD to have a big mechanical head ...
That's like trying to race a Ferrari in a Pinto, you ain't gonna win with no power... I'm a fan of big cut heads for deer sized animals but I always shoot 70lbs out of a well tuned, fast bow, and with this type setups I've never NOT had a pass through.
