We planted corn a few weeks ago and my dad checked it today. Something (we think cranes) went down the rows and plucked every one out of the ground. Left behind a one inch hole. No tracks in the foodplot and the beans are just fine. Have any of you guys heard of this? If this was your foodplot what would you do? We can try to no till beans in or wait till fall and till it up and plant a fall plot

Sure it's not turkeys? Or geese?

I've seen cranes in the plot before, I don't think turkeys or geese have a bill that would pluck them out, two inches into the ground

Turkeys are known culprits, I suppose cranes could be too but would think the cranes have stopped eating veggies at this point with all the tadpoles and other bugs big enough to eat.

Yup, I'm still sticking with turkeys. I don't know that there's much you can do, regardless of what it is unless you hang some stuff out there to scare them or a coyote decoy or something. We have problems every year but so far nothing to warrant any action. Geese are getting worse every year though.

I always blamed it on mice. I've had it happen right next to the house where I know it wasn't turkeys and cranes don't eat corn they eat fish. If you look at the holes, they probably have the soil dug out towards one side like a dog digging a hole...just tiny.

I think the mice can smell the seed. I've also had them dig up spiked corn and eat the seed off the bottom. You could try spraying hot pepper wax on the seed before planting.(?)

Turkeys wait for the corn to just sprout and then pull it up and out. Sandhills come back to Minnesota long before the bugs, tadpoles, and small fish are available they do feed on plants before the insects and other creatures are available.

It wasn't mice, it was clearly a beak and some of the corn hadn't sprouted yet which tells me it wasn't turkeys. I have also chased cranes out of our foodplot which adds to their case

We have no corn and it's about a half acre more or less. We are goin to try to find a repellant and see if it works for next year

They ate it all? Is this a plot or production? Production I'd say just broadcast some small grain to keep the weeds down at this point. Plot, your options are pretty much endless then as far as replant.

We have to find a repellent that is supposed to work first, and it has to be dry

Crows will definitely take it up and so will black birds.

I'd probably elect to drill in beans.

In an effort to figure out what works for next year we are going to plant corn again with some kind of repellent if we can find one by this weekend. It may not produce as much but hopefully we will know what to do next year. I think beans would produce the best with the Time we have left
