Had a pretty decent day to finish out the season. Was a solo river hunt (geese only). I wasn't able to do any scouting or hunting the last few weeks due to sick kids and work but I knew geese were using the river since most of the open water was frozen over. Anyways, got set up and everything went well. 2 geese came in from down river right at me. I rolled one up and got a shot on the other but not nearly enough. Couldn't get a good follow up shot either and he went back down river. I'm pretty sure I could have gotten more but I had a decoy break free and wanted to get it.
It amazes me what birds will use to keep from flying south. That's nothing more than a big creek here.
I wish the geese used rivers around where I am at. I only see them on the smaller ones in the spring.
Have any of you guys actually eaten snows? I have seen hundreds of them at a time while on stand deer hunting and always wondered if they were good.
Never had a snow, but love the Canadians and first year of really getting into it. I like the amount of meat involved and couldn't believe the difference between pheasants and geese. Sure the pheasant is cooked, but still quite a difference.
We've eaten hundreds of them. Jerky, sausage, grilled, baked, fried, in gumbo etc. To me they are better than some other kinds of waterfowl.
When it gets real cold around here they pile into the rivers when the quarrys freeze up. We have 2 decent size rivers in my area and they use both of them alot all year round.
Snows are great eating. Nothing beats puddle ducks though. Me and my daughter just had Gadwall tonight for dinner. It was very good. I did a honey/chipotle base marinade... The main grocery store here just started selling fancy duck breast and what not... 1 breast of duck runs about 18-21$ a pc. and the other ones that are smaller are like 11-14$ a single breast and a hole duck is like 35$. while me and my daughter were eating we were talking about the prices of it in the store and what i had cooked up (5 breasts)... it would have been like 60$ to buy it. Its ridiculous... hell, then after dinner we counted how many packages of duck and goose i have in the freezer... If i sold it all we could take one hell of a vacation.
If you're anything like me, if I was to add up the cost it took me to get my ducks, $35 a pound wouldn't touch it!
Here's a few pictures from what was my best season yet here in Maine, lots of birds went down and lots of great memories were made. Headed out to Missouri in a week or two to smash some snows with some good buddies of mine to top it all off! Can't wait til next season! Congrats to all you guys posting photos of your kills, never gets old looking at em!
Its been to dang cold and snowy around here. I talked to a guy today in AR and he said they are still loaded with geese.
Had a fantastic hunt today on the Potomac river in MD. We found a open area on the river with no ice that had a few islands that birds had been roosting on. We sat out all day. We ended up getting 12 birds and the last group that came in we dumped 4 of 6 and 2 were banded... from Canada in 2013
Congrats on a good hunt dogfish. Wish we were still hunting here, the amount of geese we have around right now is crazy. And the amount of ducks.. .
