Buying plenty of gear lately for my Colorado trip! Socks ??? Whats some good recommendations for good quality socks, wicking and actually stay up??
i have some real good ones i got as a gift but can't remember the name. mostly merino wool i think. very important thing for me is to spray my feet each morning with Right-Guard. helps tremendously from keeping the feet from sweating
If you can find them, I love my Fits Socks. They are superior to Smartwool. These are my two favorite styles: FITS Light Hiker Crew FITS Big Game
I bought some Darn Tough socks for my elk hunt. Very comfortable and guaranteed for life. Hunt Over-the-Calf Full Cushion - Men's Hunting - Men - Darn Tough Socks
Recommend sock with high % of merino wool. I bought come cabela brand guaranteed for life. I left my first couple trips with raw heels, so I went to a liner sock also (very thin, polyester I believe, never thought I'd be able to handle that as I'm picky about how my feet feel)...but the liner sock with same merino wool sock has helped. My socks are soaked at end of day no matter what. Duct tape on the heels each day now also has really helped... And I recommend one pair for each day unless you have chance to wash in stream, etc and hang to dry...then 2 could work with alternating each day... Also - at mid day while eating or taking break - take boots off and get sun on your feet. The arid air in moutains can dry out socks/boots rather quickly...
My mom sells socks as a vendor at the Bloomsburg, PA fair, so I get a ton of hunting socks for free. I have a whole drawer full of nothing but hunting socks + some lol. They are all slightly flawed socks from Gander Mountain and are marino wool socks, they fit great and keep my feet toasty.
Yup... I agree on the liners. I have a pair of Carhartt wool socks that are ten years old and still lost their stretch... I'd buy 'em again.
Lorpen has some good socks. Camofire has some good deals on them. Merino wool or wool of some sort. Will still provide warmth if wet. I wouldn't get a real heavy sock, but a nice hiking sock. I would bring an extra pair so they can dry out. Even switching during the middle of the day doesn't hurt. Buy socks and whatever boots you plan on wearing. Make sure to use them in an inclined environment such as hills and really use them. Better to find out what works for you now rather than on your limited time for elk. I bought the wrong size boots and returned before elk hunting and that was a big deal. I had huge blisters on the back of my heel because of it slipping. Try it out. Your feet are probably one of your most important tools out west. It would have been a uncomfortable elk trip if I wouldn't had been put miles on ahead of time. (in regards to my boots, but also just physical conditioning is a must)
