I am thinking about getting a pistol to take in the truck and to take when I am hunting and fishing, especially when im alone. I will also target shoot every now and then. I am thinking I want either a 9mm or a .40. I am on a limited budget(in college) of about $400. What caliber would yall recommend and would you look new or find a nice used gun?

I was looking at those. Do you have one or have you shot one?

I have seen some of these too. Armslist around here is full of different ones and both of those seem to be in my range.

4th Gen Glock 19. Love mine with trijicon hd night sights. Has well over 1000 rds and still runs great, been dirty and in the woods with me hunting all the time and has never failed a shot. Great pistol. Also great to conceal carry as well.

Another vote for the Glock 19. It will be tough to find one new for that price but there are a ton of them used floating around.

Glock would be a great choice. I don't think you will find a Gen 4 for that price. You should be able to find a Gen 3 used for that price though.

I prefer either the g19 or an M&P9c, which ever you shoot better.
In my area both are about $450 new and $400 used.
Stay with the 9mm, the slight ballistic advantage ( if any) of the .40 is not worth the increase in felt recoil, ammo price and reduced capacity.

Also the Shield 9mm is also a good choice if you want something slimmer and lighter.

Your search should start with Glock and end with 19.
    Best. Pistol. Ever.

(with deepest condolences to Sam Colt and John Browning.)

I like my Glock 20 better than the 19... but I prefer to stop anything from a Grizzly Bear to a Mouse...

Either way the search starts and ends with Glock.

I have a Shield 9mm, and I love that thing. If you end up getting a concealed carry permit (which you should...), it conceals very easily. If I am awake and not in class, I have my Shield on me, no if ands or buts. No one knows unless I tell them, except my girlfriend. I finally got it through to her that I will always have a pistol on me, no matter the occasion :tu:

Yea I pick up the blue label glocks for $425 w/ 3 mags but many gun shops sell to civilians for over $550 in my area. Look around for a used one. Things last some time.

My dad bought a Ruger SR9 this summer and has been very happy with it. I'm not sure how much he paid though.

I carry either the .40 Shield or the Glock 23. If you like 9mm then the Glock 19 like others have stated would be the one you want. I like the Glock a lot more but it is nice on hot days to carry the Shield being that it conceals easier.

It will be open carry only for 3 years until I can get my concealed weapons permit. I am looking at a lot of used guns as well as some new. Thanks for all the replies so far.
