I've had my bow for about a year now and am looking at upgrading my sight. After watching the new BHOD episode, I obviously looked into the new HHA single pin they talked about. My question is how difficult is it in the stand to range, adjust & shoot? I know most hunters, including myself, have a mental range card of distances in their stand but having never used a single pin adjustable, I don't know how most hunters manage their shooting. Do you range, adjust & shoot or set your sight for an average/ideal distance and "Kentucky windage" the shot or adjust sight to best guess of distance and then shoot?
I would recommend either the Opitimizer Pro or the brand new King Pin. Regarding your question though, I set mine at 25 cause most of my shots are 20-30, then I just aim as normal knowing my shot placement will be where it needs to be. I do have one shot that is out to 40 then I just spin my dial and I'm good again. The dial, Optimizer Pro is the way to go, easiest and less movement. Sent from my IPhone 5S.
I used an HHA last year (good sight too). I have since switched to a Black Gold 3 pin adjustable for the reasons that out west, shots can vary anywhere from 15 to 60 yds. What I like about the BG I have is that once you get the bottom pin or "floater" dialed in, the other two pins adjust accordingly. So, I can have 3 pins adjusted to accommodate a wide range of shot options depending on the situation and makes "shooting the gap" easier for me. I watched a hunting show the other day and watched the hunters constantly ranging and adjusting prior to making the shot. It ended up costing a hunter the animal by not being able to take the shot when it was crunch time.
I'm sure many single pin shooters are a better shot than I, and have killed more deer, but when it comes to "Go Time" I prefer to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) I hunt some thick woods and can't see most deer until they're very close. The less I have to do the better, and moving a site pin wasn't something I wanted to do so I picked up a 3 pin site. To each his/her own. Good luck with your research.
I split the difference from hitting a little high at 20 and a little low at 35. Any further out and I feel I'll have time to adjust. SCFox
I leave mine set at 25 and I'm good 0-30. That covers 90% of the deer I'll ever need to shoot at but if one comes in farther away I'll range, adjust, and shoot.
Same here. My 20 yard is high and my 30 is dead nuts, I'm not big on shooting past 30 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have a black gold single pin sight and its awesome! i taught myself range and continue to practice with judging distances so if i don't have time to range a deer i can get a good solid range out of just taking an educated guess. Or if I'm in a stand range trees and such around so you know what the distances are so you don't have to range the deer. Of course if you have time its always good to be sure about the range IMO but i think its good to have an idea about ranges.
I just ordered the spot Hogg Hogg father, and I absolutely love this sight so far. I got the single pin version as well. I have my pin set at 30 yards with that anything under 30 I am a tad bit low. I took a few shots at my target to see what would happen if I aimed normally when I'm under 30 yards and the arrow hit about 4" high so even if I forget to aim a bit low it'll still be a kill. Then what I did is engrave a mark on the pin that I use as a reference for 40 yards which is dead on. Anything further than that I figure ( hope at least) I'll have time to adjust and take the shot.
I was close to getting the 3 pin version instead for those close situations but out west here I don't hunt out of a tree stand very often, most of my shots are in the 30-60 yard range and I find it so much nicer having just the one pin to focus on, and if needed I still have the engraved 40 yard indicator.
If you have everything tuned good on your bow, you should hit with your 20 yard pin anything from 0-20 dead on. It's such a short distance.
I'm looking forward to trying the new Axcel Accutouch! The HHA looks good, but I am stoked about the Axcel. Good shooting!
I loved the single pin for practice but I've gone back to a 5 pin Hogg it for hunting. Less to think about.
