Yesterday morning, I decided to go out for a few hours hunting before a long day at work so got up early and got the ZR2 truck all packed up... On the way to my spot, nailed a 10 point that was most likely chasing a doe. I was coming over a hill and right at the peak, he came out of the trees and smacked. He didn't give me any time to hit breaks and didn't even have time to think about what just happened. Stopped the truck and went to see how he was doing, he was killed instantly. So called my buddy and got him loaded, got a tag from the Sheriff. Gutted it and sent it in to get some steaks and meat out of it. It was a unfortunate experience that we all wish wouldn't happen but it does. The ZR2 is in rough shape. But, did get a new set of rattling antlers just in time for the rut here in Iowa! Curious to see how many of you on here has had this happen to you where you were heading out hunting and hit a deer before arriving to the stand.
a couple years ago my father had a similar story. He had hunted all day in VT, came out at dark , climbed into the truck and headed for home. A couple miles up the road, a buck jumped out right in front of him. He hit the deer, but it didn't kill it. The next day he went back with my cousin and brother, they all split up in an effort to find him. A few hours later my brother located and shot it. It ended up being a 7 point.
got stopped 6" short from 55 mph as 2 doe ran out of the corn in front of the ranger the other night on the way from hunting. it got new brake pads the next morning i've never hit a deer, alot of close calls though. no pics ?
Never a deer. However opening day of pheasants seasons one year we had a pheasant fly through the windshield on our way to the first field. Made for a really brisk drive the rest of the day. lol!
had a wild turkey go over my Tahoe a few years ago. 25 lb bird would have joined me in the front seat if any lower. Too close for comfort!
My buddies dad smoked an 8 on the way to their property on opening day. Shredded the deer, this happened on the highway. Totaled his truck as well
My jeep is in the garage right now - it got hit by a buck a week ago. Darn thing came running full throttle through a field at night. My husband thought he made it with out hitting him then whack into the back end. His antler hit right on the passenger rear door, scratched the whole way back, then got stuck in my bumper and ripped that off. Granted, it's just plastic, but still. No idea on size - couldn't find it! We even went back the next morning and searched the brush/wooded areas. No sign. If he lived that (which would be crazy) he has some serious brain damage!
Never hit a deer on the way out but my buddy and I almost hit a turkey on our first trip out hunting them. All I remember is sitting in my buddys grand prix passenger seat and leaning wayyy back as the bird basically skimmed across his hood.
I have hit 3 in my F350 and never done more than dent a bumper thankfully but nothing bigger than a 120 pound 4 point either.
It's really hard to go a long time without having the experience of hitting a deer, especially in Iowa, and especially during the rut.
Way back in 2003 I had got my license that summer so any chance I got to drive, I was game. Literally the week before bow season my step father and myself were just coming back from our archery shop and a buck came up out of the ditch like nothing was going on. It was dark out and by the time I saw him it was too late. Killed him instantly and my step dad had to calm me down as I just sat there staring trying to figure out what happened. All in all I ended up with a busted headlight, set of rattling antlers, and some meat.
During high school, I hit 4 deer (separate occasions) with the 88 Ford Ranger I had. Never did fix the truck, it was in pretty rough shape Only killed 2 of the deer though
