This. A great blood trail that ends after 100 yards usually indicates a muscle hit from which the recover. The arrow could have hit one of the spiney processes coming off of the spine in the backstrap area which accounts for the lack of penetration.

    Good luck.

Sometimes, our eyes or perception can fool us. meaning you think you only got 4 inches of penetration, but think you find you had much more. I hope I'm correct, and you have a dead buck. Even if you hit a rib and it slowed the arrow to a stop you still should have enough penetration to have hit the liver. You don't have to destroy the liver to kill a deer, all you have to do is injure it. Destroying the liver is much better, I guess you have a dead buck of your dreams.

Yes any where on the torso a modern bow will penetrate. Ribs won't do anything. I have many many dead animals with arrow going right through ribs on the way in and out.

If your absolutely sure about the penetration depth (which believe me sometimes its amazing how your eyes play games on you) then it must be high enough to get into the spine or backstraps. That being said a shot in the spine the deer would have fallen. So you must have had deeper penetration.

Good luck, look today, I imagine your going to get some more clues in daylight.

Great news. He was found. If we walk 10 feet more he would of been found. Sold 8 pointer. Now the coyotes got ahold of him. The arrow was still in him and it went though him. Will post pics after work. Thanks for being there guys.

Lies is all my eyes say...pics pics pics! :)

(happy you found him....I was gonna say only 4 inches penetration without hitting solid bone should never happen...something setup wise would have been wrong IMO)

Congrats on finding your buck!! looking fwd to the pics. I shot one in Nebraska during the 2012 season. Looked like a good hit but he was bedded and alive in a canyon 4 hours later. Left him overnight and found him right there the next morning. 4 coyotes were on him and barely left enough of his cape for a mount. They don't waste time as we were there at first light. The thing is, when I posted the story with pics , several asscracks replied how I didn't know how to hunt and it was my fault the deer was wasted. Some peoples kids.....hope I never read those kinds of comments again.
