Just wondering anyones thoughts on when you do your first morning hunt for a mature buck? It should be getting close, I have read around Oct 21 for the pre rut. I have a 6 year old just show up as he does every year at this time and have 2 travel corridors over waterholes I have yet to hunt this year. Getting a little itchy but I know first time I hunt one of these stands will be my best chance to harvest him or another big boy. Thanks for any thoughts. Scoot
I don't have a lot of opportunities to get out in the woods so I hunt whenever I can. I have found that morning hunts can be very productive during an October cold front.
Whenever it hits me to start. Time I have available, weather, recorded deer movement, etc... I don't mark a specific time on the calendar to start hunting big bucks...I let my get tell me when to get serious about it.
I've been hunting mornings since Sep 1st. and this year the mornings have been better than the evenings by a long ways.
I rarely see a mature buck until the last week in October. So I try and stay away from certain stands until then. So, next weekend for me.
I also do not have a lot of time to spend in the stands - so I hunt mornings whenever I am available (Usually Saturday's). My activity has all been in the evenings. Small bucks are starting to chase does - but we're having a slight warm up this week. Mornings have been in the low 40's though.
You shouldn't hunt the mornings at all scoot. If you did you might mess up my hunt when I'm sneaking into the empire stand to get a shot at Crabclaw lol
When I feel like getting up early....I am serous. Hunt fringe areas or secondary properties and I take a shot...sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
First week of November I do 2 sits a day 8 or 9 till 2 then a break and back in the stand by 3, works pretty well
rut... to risky before then...unless you have stands in areas you dont really care if you spook the monsters out...forever.
