I really appreciate your input and time hunter1005.

I do know what crab apples, persimmons and muscadines look like. Heck I have a persimmon tree and muscadine vine in the back yard. I didn't think to look for them before... I was mostly concentrating on oak trees, tracks, and scat. I'll have to keep an eye out for them in the field.

The last time I was out, I saw a ton of green pine cones that were all torn up from the squirrels. I didn't realize that deer would pick through their leftovers, so thanks for the great tip.

Once again, I really appreciate the help hunter1005. I hunted some when I was a kid, but that was mostly walking outside with the .22 and shooting small game. It helps to have some outside help.

      Best of hunting to you.

One of the best food sources to find up there from what I have heard besides oaks are crab apples. They ripen around October. Along with persimmons. If you do not have the book look it up on the internet what the plant and fruit look like so you will notice what to look for in the woods. Mascadines or (wild grapes) are also a good food source. But they ripen and fall in Aug to the end of September.
Also find pines where the squirrels are eating. The Deer eat pine nuts left from the squirrels. You will now when you find the squirrels because they leave a mess of pine cone scraps on the ground.

Start making notes of what foods sources the deer are eating between seasons. What is preferred. That will help. Send me pm's if you have any more questions. Sometimes there are 2 many eyes getting information off the forum for locations. Get a gps if you do not have one already. I am in central florida and hunt in central florida.
