Mix of winter rye, winter wheat, oats and radish with a little clover also. Hoping it helps keep the pressure off of the brassicas. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We have 2 plots at our lease, both are a mixture of oats/winter rye/winter wheat that was drilled in with brassicas broadcast throughout. Plots were planted mid-August and didn't get their first rain until about the 20th so they've had about 2 or 2 1/2 weeks of growth when these pics were snapped. Plot 1 Looking from the open field into the "pocket" where our stand is at. We kept the brassicas on the top of the ridge (left side) and left the hillside only oats/rye/wheat. Deer bed in the brassicas Looking out to the open field. Stand is directly to the left of this photo. Plot 2 There's a few bare spots but overall it's coming up pretty well. View from the stand overlooking the plot. It's going to be a tough job to kill something from here as the deer are going to have to come into the back of the plot to get close enough. We're planning on a mock scrape dripper close to the stand and also heavy use of a decoy come late October. We threw down about 100 lbs of 10-10-10 fert on both plots last week right before a rain so that should help give them a little boost heading into the season. Only time will tell if all the work pays off...
My plots are wet but they seem to be OK considering everything. They are pounding the Brassicas Winter Rye and peas that have 3 weeks.
I'm heading out after work to trim a couple stands here in the 'burbs and plan on checking one of my plots. I have a feeling it's going to look more like a pond than a food plot... Photos to come later.
Wow, that's some serious growth. What exactly did you plant and when did you plant it? Here's one of my poor man's plots. Can't get any equipment in here so we killed it with RoundUp a few times this summer, raked it off, then broadcast a mix of wheat/rye/oats/turnips in it. It's doing okay but not great. The brassicas aren't fairing too well where the standing water was at and a lot of them are turning yellow/brown right now. Oats and wheat are doing pretty good. A few weeks ago Two days ago
Destroyed soybeans with a little overseeded brassicas on the right. Radish clover and rye on the left with a small chunk of brassicas. Brassica section. Entire plot is about 1 1/2 acres done for a friend in Iola. This was not plowed in 15 years and besides an initial half a$$ on e over with a tractor was done will a couple 4 Wheelers and a backback sprayer. We saw a ton of does saturday and a 3 Yr old 110" right at dark. Also had the first bear in five years of running cameras on friday morning.
This is on my property. I have a bit of a half circle that winds around a stand at 20 yards. Worst muck low ph soil on the planet. Based on the original main plot I would say its about 4.5 ph of rich black swamp muck. It also gets very little sunlight. Look at the carpet of winter rye and oats growing anyway. Winter rye is a great option for poor spots.
This pic is just about 30 days. It was seeded I believe 8/16. It's all Heartland Wildlife Insitute Buck Buster. Overall I'm pretty happy with this considering I wasn't able to lime anything. The plot is 90 yards x 35 yards or so and I put down 200lbs of 19-19-19 between two separate applications.
