What do yall spray to kill weeds before you plant and how long do you wait before planting? Burning isn't an option
Roundup or a mix of roundup and 2-4D works well, wait a week and you should be good. I have planted with a no-till right behind the roundup and was fine. 2-4D has to have at least a week. Most of the time roundup will get most everything.
I plowed a new plot a few weeks ago then one of the guys that hunts with me went and sprayed all of our smaller kill plots yesterday. I will plobably till and plant labor day weekend as long as the weather is good.
Did some more tilling today, rain cut me short though. Needs a few more passes to break the ground up good and them I'll apply the lime. Looking to plant around labor day weekend as well. The beans are going to be green for awhile around me so the plot should have plenty of time to grow before the deer hit it hard.
I pushed brush all morning, carving out a new three acre food plot with a dozer. Quit for lunch but having a hard time going back in mid 90's temps and no AC...blah. All pin oak, cedar, walnut, hedge and elm...what a mess. Going to build a pond on the upper side when I get the plot cleaned out. This spot is going to rock when I get it done.
Caleb - The deeper you till the more moisture you lose in the soil.......keep that in mind. I've grown some killer brassica plots after turning only maybe 2-4" and barely breaking up the root structure. It looks like you already have that turned pretty good........... I have 3 separate plots that the guys I'm sharing the lease with already sprayed. Combined they are roughly 1.5 acres. This weekend I'm going to disc, fertilize, and seed. I'll be taking tons of pics to share when I'm done. This is my first year doing everything with an ATV. In years past I had access to a 4wd tractor and full size 3 point equipment. Below are pics my my new GroundHog Max and my homemade drag to cover seed. I had a drag I used just like this in PA and NY but this style disc is new to me, hopefully it works as well as all the reviews said it would!!
Last week on my vacation i planted all my fall experimentals 5 different forage oats fall triticale and winter forage winter wheat and 7 different brassicas in 60 days there will be tonnage per acre measurements and forage analysis for everything....
Waiting on rain now! I've got 15 pounds of turnips, 5 of raddish, and 5 of red clover going into my blend. Last year turnips were the ticket, so I've decided to make that the staple in my plots. We'll see how it goes. Half the fun of food plotting is experimenting with different varieties. I'm excited to see how this turns out.
I might be shooting you a pm in a week or so to see how you liked the groundhog max. Have you broken any ground with it?
Naw, the neighbor drills a few acres of beans every year in the same plot, so I always try to offer something different than what he's doing. The other neighbor is an alfalfa guy. So between the three of us we've got some good nutrition going into our herd and no one gets butt hurt about "plot copying". Now if I could get billy the 3rd grade reader that shoots every two year old in the timber each fall and has about 68 cousins that hunt with him to sell his ground I'd have it made.
I couldn't tell based on just the size but if it was just one I was gonna say that seeding rate is a little high.
Not yet. I'll post an update on Sunday after I get done. I've got about 1.5 acres in total that need turned so I'm hoping I can get it done with this in a day.
Haha yeah that'd be a lotta seed for 1 acre. It should be about right for two. I'm just using a hand spreader so hopefully I get good germination
What do you guys use to remove the dead grass/weeds after spraying and mowing? They were shoulder high when I sprayed them. After they turned yellow/brown I mowed everything down to about 3 inches, so now there is quite a bit of 'debris' left.
