I don't have access to a disc, I've called everywhere I can find trying to rent a tractor and a disc in order to plant a 1 acre food plot. (Brassicas) All I can find is a brush hog. I have a 4 wheeler but also no disc. Has anyone here ever used a hand tiller? I'm sure it won't be easy but I'm not sure what other options I have at this point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Did anyone have a Pull behind tiller for a tractor? depending on what condition your plot is in that would work just as good as a disc. Around here several rental shops have them for rent. If they don't then I would try to round up a couple buddies and their tillers. Plus a cooler full of cold beer.
I did a half acre plot with a rear tined hand tiller last year and it worked great. It takes a little time but it go the job done.
Use a rear tine tiller and you can do it. Just takes time. A lot of places like Home Depot rent them.
yep be sure to rent the biggest one they got and then get ready for some work but it can be done. We used to do about a 1 acre garden that way.
Thanks for all the input. I feel a little better now. It will be worth all the hard work I'm sure. Getting a few shooters on camera lately.
Yep, what bje80 said, for brassicas just roundup area so you have a good kill and spread brassicas seeds along with fertilizer on dead thatch. Drive over plot with your atv tires and do so right before a rain. Scoot
Use one every year to do all of my kill plots. I bowhunt over them. Works like a charm although it's a little bit of work. Sweat never killed anybody (yet). They seem to work well enough. Fanny-Packer Doe I killed out of one of my plots.
I forgot to mention, I also use a rake (to cover seed) and a bag, seed-broadcaster. Although, I've been known to hand-spread seed as well, although a broadcaster makes the seeding more even. I usually just do wheat and oats because I've always been on a tight budget. Takes me about 1 day to do all the plot work, from clearing sticks, tilling, raking the vines and stuff out of the area, to tilling, seeding, and covering. I actually really enjoy it although it does take some work. Best of luck to you.
A gas rear tine tiller is great for hard soil and large area. Here is a great guide to start Top 10 Garden Tiller Reviews 2016 - The Good Gears.
Sadly we do all of our plots except one with a rear tine tiller....someday I'd love to upgrade to a four wheeler capable of the ground hog max attachment. Right now though pops and I both grab a rear tine tiller and start going to town.
Here is the one we have for our Kubota. I worked our 1 acre plot with it last year and it worked well. Currently I am looking for a good disc so I don't have to use the tiller so much. If your going to get a tiller for a tractor I would go reverse tine if you can RTR25 Series Rotary Tillers | Land Pride
I used a box blade this year. Worked well for us. here's a little sequence of pictures of what the area looked like before and after.
