Looking for the right seed to overseed into one of my existing plots. Planted a Evolved Harvest 'Shot Plot' which is a blend of rape and turnip brassicas. I mixed it with a bottle of plot mixers radish seed. It is starting to grow good and I am now looking to overseed it because it is a small plot and gets a lot of browsing. When it comes to picking seed theres just too many options for me to pick one.
I was thinking clover but I have had good luck with brassicas so really either way just looking for a good seed that will withstand some browsing
My thoughts were make sure your not "overseeding" your brassicas. They need room to grow up. Clover or oats or rye was what I was thinking. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Yeah I get you now. But it will get some pretty hard browsing and most of the plots don't reach maturity so I figured if I could keep seeding them it would create a plot that might last longer than a month
I am no expert but you might want to throw some winter rye in with it, grows easy, good fall and winter food and it will also pop up first thing in spring to give deer much needed food, I would buy a 50 lb bag and over seed it around end of Aug or Labor day. Scoot
2nd this. I will say the Brassica does get pretty big and it will drown out most other seeds like clover.
You can get a couple LBS of beet seeds at the feed store for 10$ here in NC. Thats what I use just due to the fact it's very inexpensive.
How many acres of food plots do u have? whats currently planted what other crops are surrounding your property whats your goals whats your pH and soil type?
this plot is only about a 1/4 of an acre. i have 3 like this and one thats about 3/4 of an acre like I said this plot has brassicas turnips and radishes as well as the other small ones. the big plot has corn and brassicas I am surrounded by young pine forest to the south and mature hardwood forest to the south My goals are to keep a healthy plot through at least late November The soil is sandy but I havent done a ph test in a couple years
I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Winfred brassica. It's my go to recommendation. It is a kale/forage turnip cross that will stay green until 10 degrees or so. It grows every where i've put it and give one huge tonnage. I had 5' tall winfred last year. It fits a good maturity slot for planting this time a year and is inexpensive. One can buy for $4.50 a lb and if your over seeding, you might only need a couple lbs of seed per acre. Nutritionally i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee kale. The fad for humans should also cross over to the food plots. Little known fact, kales are the highest tonnage per acre brassicas one can plant. I love maximum energy per acre.
Thanks for the help. This plot makes a V so i think in one leg I will plant rye and in the other I'll try the winfred brassica
I'm a huge advocate for clover. Clover can take heavy browsing, it is easy to maintain. You also get a high tonage yield and so many animals other than deer eat it. Turkeys love clover.
