Well today was my first morning out for the 2014 season and day 1 was unsuccessful. I got out a little later than I wanted. Walking to the blind I heard lots of gobbling. I set up decoys around 7:30. Called for about an hour. No responses or advances. I'm using a box call and a slate and carbon call. Only been using it for about a week. We left to go eat and run a few errands, but I'm going back this evening around 3pm to see what happens. At the least I'll pick out another spot for the morning closer to the roosting trees. Just wanted to report day 1. Hope you guys are having more luck than me. Good luck everyone. Mike
Went out yesterday evening and this morning. Still to bird. Last night went to the blind just to check activities and double check on roosting trees. I moved the blind out of the field and right before the clearing at the edge of the mountain and this morning I got 3 toms to come in.... Missed my shot! They spooked and took off. So I figured to move my blind closer to another group of turkeys roosting trees. So we will see how that pans out on the morning. It's looking like not much breeding is going on. I know there is lots of talk about the turkey season being all messed up because if the weather here in Cali. But I have faith tomorrow will be the day. Might even go back out tonight if possible. Good luck team!!

Missed a headshot on a nice hybrid here this morning. I thought I had my bullheads flying well....clearly not. Shotgun opens Wednesday, I'm ready to get one killed. Then I can go back to chasing em with my bow. What broadheads do y'all shoot?
so I don't feel as bad now. Everybody misses. I'm using Grim Reapers and T3's. I'm anxious to find out which are better for turkey. Good luck with the next hunt bud.
Keep trying Boys!!! I'm heading back out this coming weekend with the wife. Lets see If I can remember to take a pick with me the bow and the bird this time!!!!
Hey fellas just a quick update, no hunt for me today as we were rotating cattle all day from winter ground to green wheat. I will get to hunt tomorrow morning tho and it's opening day of Kansas shotgun season. Goal #1 is to get a strutter in range for my wife, and then I'll go back to chasing with stick and string. This break for me will be good so I can try to tune those bullheads some more.
Had to run and gun it this morning. My rear couldn't take another minute sitting in a ground blind. Kansas is a two bird state, so I'll try for my second bird with a bow. Killed this guy at 6:45 this morning, he came in from the roost with another Tom, 4 jakes, and 4 hens and put on a heck of a strutting and gobbling show before I dusted him at 30 yards. Gear included browning maxus 12 ga, Winchester supreme 3.5" #5 shells, HS strut undertaker choke, and a zink avian X lookout hen decoy. 10.125" on the beard 1" spurs
Thanks! I wish he was a bow bird, but I don't have much preference on weapon when hunting turkey. I enjoy both pursuits equally
Went out this past weekend and saw nothing within range other then jake's and hen's. Wishing I would have taken the pick with my bow in the shot now!!!!!!!! I wont be able to go back out until the late season again......
Congrats to you both on nice birds. Hope to get out sometime this weekend. Grand daughter was playing softball this past weekend and you have to have your priorities straight.
Slow hunting here in Kansas. Trying to get my wife her first bird and we've been after it hard the last two days. The last two mornings we've had 6 different toms at the 70 yard mark unwilling to commit. It seems like they hen up quicker each day, and the afternoon gobble has gone nonexistent. We've got some thunderstorms rolling through tomorrow, I'm hoping that will shake things up... Good luck to all of you out there
Well I kicked off my season in Wisconsin with the shotty Friday morning. 24lbs 1.125" spurs 8.5" beard. Two weeks from now ill be in a blind with the archery equipment back home
