I havent but id be to afraid to. What if you shot it in the neck on purpose and didnt kill it then that deer is just gonna walk around miserable and hurt. The mission would be to kill not hurt. But i guess everyones different but like they said youll have a much bigger odd at gettng a vital then a good neck shot

I disagree. While it can be deadly (through the chest), it's still a lower percentage shot than quartering away or broadside. Again, if one is confident in their ability, I'm not going to judge, but wouldn't pass it off as a go-to shot for the average shooter. I'll wait for the deer to present a better angle (and have), but that's just me.

For me, it is a viable shot but not a go to option, if that makes any sense? I do not believe it should ever be used at a fall back plan. But, given the right circumstances (15 yards and under), a confident shooter, and a complete understanding of a vital system it can be devastating. It crushed my elk this year.

I'm guessing turkey hunting with a bow is in poor taste too? Their necks are even smaller.

I do totally agree, the deers chest is much larger and should be your first choice.

Unless someone is using a proper head (Bull Head, Guillotine) they typically do NOT shoot for a turkey's neck. Perhaps we need a animal vital thread next.

    Yep.

I've only shot one turkey with my bow, but it wasn't in the neck :) All about percentages for me, really.

There also vital areas in the rear leg, front leg, and near the hoof. We can argue semantics all day;)

I have seen many guys on Hunting Shows shoot deer and the neck and I was like WTF. I have seen many guys shoot deer in the neck with rifles too. I have always thought it was weird, but to each it's own. I think it leaves too much room for error.

Neck shots are about 50/50. Either they go down immediately or live to suffer. Will it kill a deer? Absolutely but in my opinion the percentage it will be a clean kill is much too low to be considered ethical.

If someone purposefully shoots a deer in the neck they are a moron.

Two seasons ago opening day I had a doe come in from a thicket where I was expecting. I got stood up late and finally got my bow in hand. She was going from left to right and came in a spot between two tree's I have about a foot and a half opening between the two tree's to shoot her at 25 yds. I took the shot and brushed the tree on the right and it deflected my arrow where I shot her in the lower neck just in front of the shoulder and she didn't run more than 40 yrds and died. It was a lot faster than I thought. At first I didn't realize I hit her in the neck but was really pleased with the blood trail and how quickly she died.

    I'm a heart breaker by nature so.......lol

I'm not one to go against the grain. your taught in hunter safety course where the vitals are to shoot for a reason. ALSO, I'm a trophy hunter, I don't want to mess up the cape for a mount!
