I have never shot a deer in the neck, but wondered if anyone has? I also do not use mechanical heads, but I read that many of you out there do. Since you can get about 2.5 inches of cut out of many heads, it just seems to me that a well placed neck shot should be deadly. another reason I ask this, is that on many of the BHOD web shows, the shots have resulted in non pass through kills. If the huge heads do so much damage, would a neck shot make a quick kill, and wouldn't the blood trail be heavy? Final reason for asking is those pesky head on situation, seems to me that white spot under the chin would be a great target when you have a clear shot at it.
Twice on accident both ended quickly with an incredible blood trail (slick trick and muzzy trocar) I would NEVER shoot one in the neck purposely
Shot one in the neck on accident, she dropped right in front of me. Never would I do this on purpose.
Here is a pic of my October 1st kill it was a neck shot *** u all can see which resulted in an instant drop no trailing nded. I'm wit the fellas on this one cuz it was definitely an accident the deer was broadside then soon as I released my arrow he turned right into it an it hit his neck very unexpected. But it did drop him instantly first time for everything I guess. Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
never....ever..ever would I take that shot on purpose. Too much room for error no matter what kind of broadhead you are using. A mechanical is not a fix-all for a poorly placed shot. Take the highest percentage shot (broadside, slight quartering) or just enjoy the deer's presence and let him walk, as hard as that might be to do.
Let's hope not. Never have, never will. It's such a low percentage shot. There was a thread a few days ago that Fitz posted showing a skull of a deer that Graff shot that had a BH embedded near the nasal passages. The true killlzone of a deer is much larger and of course is filled with many vital organs and arteries. You should not be taking head on shots, either (neck or otherwise). My best friends dad, said that back in the day, 60's 70's they used to aim for the necks for the exact reasons listed above. They said it would drop the deer quickly, and the blood trails were greater, they thought it would be less suffering for the deer, and result in a quicker death. THAT BEING SAID. I always aim for vitals, wouldn't ever consider aiming for the neck. And if I did hit one in the neck, id be praying the deer just went down quick.
Downward ear canal shot at 50 yards...deadly For me getting spitting close is what bowhunting is all about.
Nice specks in your avatar! I've hunted NE KS when my brother was stationed at Ft. Riley. Great waterfowling there. No I would never purposely shoot at a deer in the neck.
I shot my buck this year in the neck (NOT on purpose!!!), and he lived for another month. I shot him on October 22nd the first time. The arrow entered in the top of his neck right above the shoulder blades, and it exited through the midway point of his neck slightly low. I don't know how it didn't kill him, but I kept getting pictures of him chasing does even with the wound. He couldn't lift his head past parallel with his spine. I ended up killing him on November 17th. He was chasing a doe, and I arrowed him at 25 yards. He had lost a considerable amount of weight since I originally shot him.
Not worth it. I dont do it. Why shoot a smaller target area when you have the much larger vital target area.
Ive shot one buck in the neck and it was a complete accident, emotion got the best of me when I had been having a stand off with him for just over a hour, he would walk in the brush and out of the brush and stay 60 yards out, he walked in the brush and popped out at 30, I would never take this shot on purpose but I obviously torqued a bit and hit 3 inches in front of the shoulder and he ran 70 yards and piled up.
I would not be afraid to take that shot it is almost always an instant kill. Put if you have any question or have trouble getting youre self to take it don't.
Not a neck shot fan. frontal shots are a whole different ball game and shouldn't be lumped in with neck shots.
